The Colorado Buffaloes' 48-0 loss to the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday was the worst in a string of five consecutive blowout defeats, says Ralphie Report's Jon Woods.

Colorado was outgained in the contest, 436 total yards to 76. At least some of the blame has to fall on head coach Jon Embree, whom Woods has defended over the course of the season. That isn't the case anymore:

All year I have been adamant that under no circumstances should Jon Embree and this staff be fired. That opinion has changed. I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe that improvement is coming, and that's all that I've asked for out of this season.

The loss to Stanford marked the first time the Buffs have been shut out at home since 1986. Over its past five games, Colorado has been outscored by an average of 52-10. It's a historically bad stretch that doesn't elicit much hope out of Boulder.

The Buffaloes have hit rock bottom, purchased furniture, and plan on staying awhile.

Colorado has a road game against Arizona and home games against Washington and Utah to close out the season. At least the Buffs can hang their hats on the fact that they won't go winless -- for the season, or in conference play -- thanks to a win at Washington State on Sept. 22.

The Stanford Cardinal defense put on a dominating performance and Kevin Hogan aced his quarterback audition as Stanford rolled the Colorado Buffaloes, 48-0. Colorado did not cross midfield until five minutes into the fourth quarter.

Stanford held Colorado to 76 total net yards, six first downs, sacked the Buffalo quarterback seven times and collected two turnovers. Out of 12 total drives, Colorado had only four go for more than three plays, and never advanced more than 25 yards down the field.

Josh Nunes played the first quarter for Stanford, going 3 for 5 for 23 yards. Hogan took over for the second and took the Cardinal offense to four touchdowns on his first four drives. Brett Nottingham was the third quarterback to play for Stanford, going 3 for 5 for 16 yards. Stepfan Taylor and Jamal-Rashad Patterson both had a hand in the run game, with Taylor picking up 43 yards and two touchdowns and Patterson adding another 42 yards.

Box Score Hero: Hogan had quite a day. The freshman finished the day having completed 18 of 23 attempts for 184 yards with two touchdowns, and another 48 yards on seven runs. Levine Toilolo had 59 yards on three receptions, and Zach Ertz had six catches for 41 yards. Each man had a touchdown.

Rankings Ramifications: Stanford, ranked No. 14 going into the game, is likely to see a boost in the rankings after such a dominant game.

But Did They Cover? At -28, Stanford had the spread covered by the second quarter.

The Colorado Buffaloes have gotten absolutely nothing going on offense and trail the Cardinal by 45 points after three quarters.

The Colorado Buffaloes continue to struggle against the Stanford Cardinal, trailing 45-0 after three quarters. Colorado has gone to their third-string quarterback, Connor Wood, after both Jordan Webb and Nick Hirschman were shut down by the Stanford defense.

Webb went 4 for 10 for 19 yards, and Hirschman managed 4 for 6 for 12 yards. The rushing game wasn't capable of bailing either of them out, having managed negative five net yards so far. The offensive line isn't pulling much weight either, having given up seven sacks to the Cardinal defense.

The defensive line lost a key contributer when Justin Solis went down with an apparent neck injury. Solis collided with teammate Chidera Uzo-Diribe on a play and went down motionless, but he had regained motion by the time he was stretchered off the field.

Colorado is playing hard, but as of yet doesn't have much to show for it. They have 15 more minutes to get on the board and save a measure of pride.

Buffaloes can't stop the Cardinal's offensive onslaught and are down big at halftime of their Pac-12 matchup.

The Colorado Buffaloes' dismal season continues as they trail the Stanford Cardinal, 35-0, at halftime of their Pac-12 contest in Boulder.

The 14th-ranked Cardinal scored once in the first quarter but added four more touchdowns in the second to blow the game open, leaving no doubt that this will not be an opening for one of the biggest upsets of the season.

The Cardinal have produced a balanced offense with quarterback Kevin Hogan throwing for one touchdown to Zach Ertz while Stepfan Taylor (2) and Remound Wright each have rushed for touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Buffaloes have only managed 20 total yards of offense, including a paltry -3 yards rushing on 14 attempts. A bulk of that comes from quarterback Jordan Webb running for his life on four carries and -12 yards.

The Cardinal enter the game 6-2 overall, 4-1 in the Pac-12 and the Buffaloes are 1-7, 1-4 in the Pac-12.

The Stanford Cardinal and Colorado Buffaloes meet this weekend in a Pac-12 clash.

On Saturday night, the Stanford Cardinal and Colorado Buffaloes will renew their inter-conference rivalry at Folsom Field.

Colorado has had a tough go of it this season with a 1-7 overall record, 1-4 in the Pac-12. The Buffaloes have lost their last four contests, including two blowouts to the fourth-ranked Oregon Ducks and No. 10 USC Trojans by a combined score of 120-20.

The Buffaloes biggest issue all season has been defense, where it gives up an average of 46 points per game, ranking them 124th in the nation. Their only win came against the Washington State Cougars back on Sept. 22 in a 35-34 thriller.

Stanford has been a picture of consistency, sporting a 6-2 record and 4-1 in conference. The Cardinal are already bowl eligible once again, something that didn't seem like sure-fire assumption with Andrew Luck leaving after last season for the NFL

Stanford has won its previous two games, with much of the credit going to the defense. The unit ranks 20th in the country, allowing a paltry 18.6 points per game.
