The Fresno State Bulldogs remained undefeated in Mountain West Conference play, dispatching the struggling Colorado State Rams 28-7 in Fort Collins on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (4-2) took advantage of fortuitous situations to build a 21-0 lead, as its first three touchdowns came on drives that began in Colorado State territory. After cashing in on a 29-yard field from a Rams fumble, Fresno State blocked a punt late in the first half. Derek Carr then hit Josh Harper on a 20-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 halftime lead.

The Rams (1-5) were buried in the fourth quarter when Carr engineered a 71-yard drive that ended when he found Davante Adams for a five-yard score and a 28-0 margin.

Colorado State was largely inept on offense, managing just 171 total yards and committing two turnovers until its final possession, when M.J. McPeek led the Rams on a 77-yard scoring drive with less than a minute left to avoid a shutout.

Box Score Hero: QB Derek Carr, Fresno State - 25-39 for 217 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Fresno State Bulldogs have taken a 14-0 lead into halftime over the Colorado State Rams in today's matchup in Fort Collins.

Fresno State cashed in on bold decision making late in the half, when the Bulldogs' heavy punt rush resulted in a blocked punt and a short field. With 32 seconds left in the half, Derek Carr connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass.

The Bulldogs also scored midway through the first quarter on another short field. Phillip Thomas sacked Rams quarterback M.J. McPeek , forced a fumble, and recovered it to give the Bulldogs a 29-yard field. Fresno State used six plays to convert, scoring when Derek Carr hit Davante Adams for a ten-yard touchdown pass.

Meanwhile, Colorado State's offense has struggled to produce much of anything. The Rams totaled just 64 yards in the half, about 15 of which came on the final two plays as CSU was running out the clock to get to halftime.

Carr is 14-21 for 128 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions so far for Fresno. McPeek has thrown for just 25 yards on 3-7 passing.

The Rams look to right the ship against a high-powered Fresno State offense.

The struggling Colorado State Rams will welcome the Fresno State Bulldogs to Fort Collins this Saturday as the two teams square off for the first time as Mountain West Conference opponents.

The last time the two teams met, the Rams posted a 40-35 win in the 2008 New Mexico Bowl.

The Rams have lost four straight games after a week-one victory over rival Colorado. Last week, Air Force rushed out to a 21-0 lead on the way to a 42-21 victory over Colorado State, running for 459 yards in the process. The Rams defense has allowed 30 points and 427 yards per game, both ranking in the 80s nationally. Meanwhile, with talented running back Chris Nwoke battling injury, the Rams are managing just 105 rushing yards per game, which ranks 112th in the nation.

Fresno State is 3-2 after a 52-40 shootout win over San Diego State. Derek Carr leads the Bulldogs' top-15 attack, completing 69 percent of his passes for 335 yards per game, 14 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. Add in Robbie Rouse leading the run game to close to 200 rushing yards per game, and Fresno's offense is cranking out 42 points per game.

If common opponents are any indicator, the Rams defeated Colorado by five, while the Bulldogs beat the Buffs by 45.

Colorado State's head coach is concerned his team is not letting loose come game day.

New Colorado St. Rams head coach Jim McElwain has instilled some fairly strict guidelines for his players this season. They include wearing suits on game days, saying please and thank you as well as sir and ma'am. There are high standards on road trips, the locker room must be up to McElwain's standards and there is no trash talking.

McElwain addressed the media earlier in the week and is wondering if the players are not being aggressive on the field due to the rules he has placed on his team:

"Now, sometimes I wonder when we get between the hedges have I created a bunch of choir boys? Are we playing with the intensity that crazed dogs play with on a Saturday in that three-hour span? I'm not sure we are."

[...]

"I'm not sure we're cutting it loose (during games)," McElwain said. "So when you look back and reflect on that, we need to find that."

Even with the aggressiveness not up to McElwain's standards, he still believes this team is getting better. He just wants to figure out the balance of getting his players to be good people, but fierce players on the football field.

The Colorado State Rams will welcome an offensive-minded Fresno State program to Hughes Stadium on Saturday for a MWC showdown.

Losers of four straight games by a total of 68 points, the Colorado State Rams will attempt to break out of their recent offensive slump at home on Saturday afternoon against a tough Fresno State team.

The Rams were torched by Air Force in a 21-point beating to open their Mountain West Conference slate last week, and now have just one win in five attempts over what can only be described as a dismal season. Colorado State's main problem against the Falcons was stopping the run, as Air Force racked up a whopping 459 yards rushing on just 67 attempts to control virtually the entire game.

Set to take on a Bulldogs squad that enters hot after rolling up 52 points on San Diego State, the Rams will be unable to put forth another middling defense performance if they plan to come away with a victory. Though the Rams did manage to earn an impressive 50-45 win the last time these schools met at the 2008 New Mexico Bowl, it's becoming clear that Colorado State's defense is not quite the same caliber it once was.
