The Wyoming Cowboys, playing without quarterback Brett Smith, lost to the FCS Cal Poly Mustangs, 24-22, on Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium. Wyoming joins Colorado State and UNLV as the third Mountain West team to lose to a FCS team this season.

Cal Poly jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on 65-yard and 9-yard touchdown runs. Deonte Williams score the former just 1:09 into the game while Kristaan Ivory scored the later a few minutes later. Wyoming's Shaun Wick punched in the first touchdown with 6:55 left in the half and the second six minutes later, giving his team a 15-14 lead at halftime. Both were one-yard runs and the former was completed with a successful touchdown run.

Ivory put the ball into the end zone for Cal Poly late in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run, gaining a 21-14 lead. That lead was extended to 24-15 with Bobby Zalud's 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Wyoming did attempt a comeback in the final minutes of the game. Wick scored his third touchdown of the game with 7:34 left in the game, but they came no closer than 24-22. Wyoming quarterback Colby Kirkegaard (15-of-23, 122 yards) threw an interception on the first play of what was the team's final possession.

Cal Poly's Williams finished the game with 188 rushing yards on 19 carries.

Wyoming (0-3) travels next week for face Idaho.

The Wyoming Cowboys could be in line for their first win of the season on Saturday. They host the FCS Cal Poly Mustangs.

The Wyoming Cowboys (0-2) host the FCS Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in search of the team's first victory this season. After dropping the road opener to the Texas Longhorns, 37-17, the Cowboys returned home and dropped that game to the Toledo Rockets, 34-31.

Wyoming lost starting quarterback Brett Smith during last week's game and he is not expected to play on Saturday. Junior Colby Kirkegaard or freshman Jason Thompson could start in place of Smith.

Cal Poly had last week off but did beat San Diego two weeks ago, 41-14, to enter this game at 1-0. If we've learned anything early on this college football season, it's that FCS teams can reckon with FBS ones. Just look at Colorado and Colorado State losing to Sacramento State and North Dakota State.

Wyoming QB Brett Smith is doubtful for Saturday's game against Cal Poly after sustaining a concussion in last week's loss to Toledo.

University of Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith has been listed as doubtful for Saturday's game against Cal Poly, according to head coach Dave Christensen (via Mountain West Connection).

Smith was injured on a late hit near the end of the Cowboys' loss to Toledo last Saturday. Smith left the field via ambulance, but passed all tests that were administered to him at the hospital. Still, he hasn't practiced this week, and with Wyoming facing FCS Cal Poly this weekend, sitting Smith down seems to be the right thing to do.

Colby Kirkegaard and Jason Thompson are expected to battle for the majority of the playing time on Saturday, with the possibility that both players could see action in the game, according to offensive coordinator Gregg Brandon.
