The Air Force Falcons had a big blow in their win over Idaho State on Saturday when starting center Michael Husar suffered a season-ending injury in the second quarter as he tore his ACL and MCL in his left knee.

Husar was an anchor across the offensive line and played in eight games last season, and his absence could be a big deal since the center is a key position in the Falcons run-option offense. There has to be some disappointment for Husar who was looking forward to playing at Michigan next week because that is where his father went to school.

The Air Force Falcons had no issues in winning their season opener over the Idaho St. Bengals Saturday afternoon. The Falcons won 49-21 and they were led by running back Cody Getz who rushed for a career-high 218 yards on just 17 carries, good for three touchdowns.

Heading into the game the running back situation was not set, but after Saturday's performance it is safe to say that Getz has earned the starting job.

Falcons starting quarterback Connor Dietz also had a great game, as he rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries, plus he completed 8-of-11 passes for 149 yards.

Air Force raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead over Idaho State and never looked back. In the second, Idaho State did get on the board first, but Air Force responded to that, as well as to all three Idaho State touchdowns.

The Air Force Falcons open the season against Idaho State on Saturday.

The Air Force Falcons enter the 2012 season with tempered expectations, far different than from the start of 2011. A year ago, the Falcons were a dark horse to challenge Boise State and TCU for the conference title. After a 7-6 season and a 42-41 loss to the Toledo Rockets in the Military Bowl, Air Force is looking at being in the middle of the conference once again.

The Falcons take on the FCS Idaho State Bengals on Saturday to open the season. Connor Dietz takes the reins at quarterback with the graduation of Tim Jefferson Jr. Dietz played sparingly over the last few seasons, but the senior will be looked on to be the team's leader.

Air Force played and defeated two FCS opponents in 2011, South Dakota and Tennessee State, and should add another one victory to the school's win-loss record. However, with the big Michigan game coming up on Sept. 8, the Falcons don't want a lower-level football team take advantage of them before a trip to the Big House.

It will be his only season of playing starting quarterback for the Air Force Falcons, but senior Connor Dietz appears ready to assume the leadership role, writes David Ramsey of the Colorado Springs Gazette.

Dietz figures to be a perfect fit for Air Force's run-heavy offensive style of play and could turn out to be one of the premier rushers in all of the Mountain West, reports Ramsey.

He's the rare quarterback who enjoys punishing linebackers. He prefers the violence of the playing field to the safety of running out of bounds.

In addition to his bruising running style, Dietz has also kept his teammates on their toes by flinging a few deep balls in Falcons practice. Still, it appears that under the senior signal-caller's guidance, Air Force's attack will be heavy doses of ground and pound in 2012.

Going into a season-opening match of the season against the Idaho State Bengals, Air Force will have their work cut out for them to keep themselves in the game offensively. Fortunately for the Falcons, they are currently riding high on a group of three tailbacks who have been tearing it up in the preseason.

Wes Cobb, Cody Getz and Jon Lee have all been doing very well for the Falcons, putting together a committee running approach that even saw the official depth chart listing all three as the starter. The three of them bring different styles of running game to the table, which helps the Falcons mix it up with their 'Three Headed Monster':

Cobb is a solid all-around player who can wear down a defense. Getz is the home-run threat who has transformed into a good inside runner and was one of the Falcons’ best players in August. Lee is an intriguing talent who has the look of a future star but needs to become more assignment sound to carve out a bigger role.

If all three can stay hot against the Bengals, Air Force will have a far better chance of taking a 1-0 record from their first game.

Air Force has released its depth chart for its season opening game against Idaho State.

The Air Force Falcons have released their depth chart for their season opening game against Idaho State on Saturday. There are five positions that are up for grabs, and the biggest position that does not have a starter is at the running back spot. Wes Cobb, Cody Gets and Jon Lee are all vying for that starting spot.

The senior Cobb should have the edge since he has the most experience and is the team's leading returning rusher. With Air Force's run heavy offense, and that it is playing a FCS opponent, expect all three to get carries on Saturday.

On the defensive side of the ball, there are four other position battles at various spots. The defensive end position could be a big deal because if Alexander Hansen starts on Saturday he would become just the second freshman since Alex Means in 1981 to earn a starting defensive spot as a freshman for a season opener.

The other position battle is for the starting free safety spot between Christian Spears and Anthony LaCoste.
