The Colorado Rockies failed to pick up a series victory on Sunday by falling to the San Francisco Giants, 9-6. Hunter Pence's three-run home run -- his first long shot since moving to the Giants -- broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The game didn't start off well for the Rockies, as Alex White (ND, 5.82 ERA) allowed three runs on a Melky Cabrera two-run single and a Brandon Belt RBI single. However, White didn't allow any more runs after that. He just started to pile up the pitches thrown, which left him out of the game after 82 pitches in four innings of work.

The Rockies tied the game by the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles in the third inning and an Alex White sacrifice fly in the fourth. After Carlos Torres allowed a run in the fifth inning, the Rockies answered back in the sixth with a DJ LeMahieu RBI double and a Torres single to plate LeMahieu. Jordan Pacheco's sac fly in the seventh had the Rockies in a 6-4 lead.

Then came the bottom of the eighth, which started with Matt Belisle (3-4, 3.34 ERA) on the mound. He loaded the bases on a single, a ground rule double and a walk. After an infield single scored a run, closer Rafael Betancourt entered the game. He blew the save on a Buster Posey sac fly and then served up to Hunter Pence the gopher ball that put the Giants ahead, 9-6.

Two Giants pitchers sent the Rockies down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth. Clay Hensley picked up the win while starter Barry Zito allowed four runs in 5.1 innings.

The Rockies (41-71, 20-34 away) host the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday to start a three-game series.

The Colorado Rockies are planning on making a decision regarding pitcher Jhoulys Chacin's status with the team on Monday, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Chacin pitched well in a recent rehab start with Triple-A Colorado Springs, putting pressure on the club to put their best pitcher from 2011 back into the mix.

Early in the season, Chacin struggled against big league hitters as he battled through pain, eventually hitting the disabled list with a right shoulder injury. It's taken over two months for the the 24-year-old to get back into MLB condition, but he pitched 6.2 strong innings against Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

With his velocity back in the low-90's, manager Jim Tracy reflected the team's optimism, but he also insisted that the Rockies aren't straying from their current four-man rotation. Renck speculates that the team could skip Drew Pomeranz's next start to make room for Chacin, but we'll know more on Monday.

The Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants will battle on Sunday afternoon for the series victory at AT&T Park. Colorado enters the game with a 9-3 loss on Saturday, a huge letdown following Friday's 3-0 victory.

The Rockies will have Alex White (2-6, 5.75 ERA) on the mound for the possible series victory. White's last start saw him throw four scoreless innings and allow just one hit, but he reached 80 pitches after 12 outs. He had trouble locating the strike zone, walking five. He might have been able to go a couple more innings if not for that. This will be just his third start with the Rockies since returning on Aug. 2, when he 5.1 innings of two-run ball.

Barry Zito (9-8, 4.19 ERA) hasn't faced the Rockies since Coors Field Opening Day on April 9. It's a game the Rockies would like to forget. Zito threw a four-hit complete game shutout. In August, Zito has been on opposite ends of the spectrum for his two starts. He allowed seven runs in 4.1 during his first start, but he came back with two runs allowed in 6.2 innings on Tuesday.

This game is scheduled to begin at 2:05 p.m. MT. ROOT Sports will have the television broadcast while the radio call can be heard on 850 KOA.

The Colorado Rockies were unable to string together two wins in a row in San Francisco, losing to the Giants, 9-3. The Giants struck early for a 4-0 lead by the end of the third inning and never looked back.

Drew Pomeranz (1-7, 5.04 ERA) failed to follow up his previous four-inning outing with another sterling effort. This time he allowed the first four runs of the game and reached 73 pitches. The big blows came on a two-run Buster Posey home run, a Joaquin Arias sac fly and a Matt Cain RBI single.

Josh Roenicke allowed four more runs after he entered the game in the fifth inning. Hunter Pence doubled in a run in the fifth inning, Angel Pagan triple in two runs and former Rockie Marco Scutaro singled in Pagan, extending the lead to 8-1 in the sixth inning. Rex Brothers allowed the ninth run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.

Colorado scored its runs on a Josh Rutledge fielder's choice, DJ LeMahieu's first career home run and a Chris Nelson RBI single. Giants starter Matt Cain (11-5, 2.99 ERA) allowed two runs in 7.1 innings and struck out six.

The Rockies (41-70, 20-33 away) conclude this series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. MT with Alex White facing Barry Zito.

As part of his comeback from left groin surgery in June, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki went through his toughest day Friday, with a grueling set of movement exercises -- running and lateral movement, among others -- administered by head athletic trainer Keith Dugger at AT&T Park.

"We signed up for this because we want to be out there on the field, so just watching is tough," Tulowitkzi said.

The Colorado Rockies announced a roster transaction on Saturday before a game against the San Francisco Giants: Reliever Will Harris has had his contract selected from the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Because Harris in not on the 40-man roster, the team has to make two other transactions to make this possible.

Todd Helton, who is out for the season following hip surgery, was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day one. That clears the spot on the 40-man roster. Edgmer Escalona was placed on the 15-day disabled list with Olecranon Bursa inflammation in his right arm, opening up a spot on the active roster.

Harris, 27, will be available to pitch on Saturday. He has split the 2012 season between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Colorado Springs. After posting a 2.62 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 34.1 innings with Tulsa, Harris moved up to Triple-A. In 17.2 innings, he has put up a 1.02 ERA and struck out 20.

Escalona rejoined the Rockies in August and pitched on the 4th and 5th, but hasn't been on the mound since then. He has an 11.88 ERA in nine appearances.

The Colorado Rockies picked up a 3-0 victory against the San Francisco Giants -- a major surprise -- and will look to follow that up on Saturday with a new winning streak. The Rockies entered this series by taking two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they lost the finale on Wednesday. Colorado can now start a new winning streak.

Drew Pomeranz (1-6, 4.76 ERA) picked up a no-decision earlier in the week against the Dodgers when he threw four shutout innings and struck out seven. He reached 84 pitches after the final out of the fourth inning, triggering a move to Adam Ottavino for the next three innings. The Rockies won the game, 2-0.

The Giants counter Pomeranz with Matt Cain (10-5, 3.01 ERA), who is looking to get his August back on track. On Monday, Cain surrendered five runs in 5.2 innings to the St. Louis Cardinals, a game the Giants lost, 8-2. He did take the loss in his Aug. 1 start, but he allowed just two runs in five innings during the 2-1 loss to the New York Mets.
