A quarterback competition is shaping up for the Colorado Buffaloes in 2012, but it won't included highly touted freshman Shane Dillon. Head coach Jon Embree said on Monday the new quarterback will likely redshirt after undergoing shoulder surgery in February. While Dillon recovers, it appears that Connor Wood, Jordan Webb and Nick Hirschman will engage in a three-man race to become Colorado's starting signal caller.

Webb is considered the favorite by some, if only because he's the only member of the trio with previous starting experience. Webb spent two seasons as the starter for the Kansas Jayahawks, but decided to transfer to Colorado after Charlie Weis arrived in Lawrence and former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist declared he would join him.

The Colorado Buffaloes looked to have gained a starting quarterback in Connor Wood on Saturday following an impressive spring game performance. However, Nick Hirschman is expected to challenge Wood in fall camp when August comes around. We can also expect a freshman quarterback to be in line for some playing time: Shane Dillon, according to the Denver Post.

Of course, things could change over the next four months or so and leave Dillon redshirting this fall. This is a Buffaloes team that is coming off a 3-10 season in 2011 and is replacing many key starters on offense. Dillon could certainly gain playing time during blow outs -- if they happen -- but it's hard to imagine Wood and his non-freshman backups playing ahead of Wood at the moment.
