The Colorado Rockies rode strong pitching to a 8-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night at Coors Field. In order to avoid a sweep, the pitching staff really turned the tides after allowing 20 runs over the first two games of the series.

Through six innings on Thursday, the game was actually tied 2-2, but the Rockies offense blew things open by scoring three runs apiece during each of the final two frames. Starter Alex White pitched five shutout innings to begin the game, but he needed Rex Brothers to bail him out after being chased during a sixth inning rally by St. Louis.

Jordan Pacheco led the way for Colorado on offense with three hits, including a pair of doubles, while both Wilin Rosario and Josh Rutledge went deep for the Rockies. With the bullpen pitching 3.2 shutout innings, that was more than enough firepower.

The Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals are tied 2-2 through six innings of play on Thursday night after starter Alex White saw the wheels fall off following a strong start. The outing is truly a microcosm of White's 2012 season so far, as he continues to show flashes of skill despite middling results.

White was in the midst of the shutout through the first five innings of Thursday's game, but he got into trouble during the sixth inning and ultimately couldn't finish it. After allowing a pair of runs, White left reliever Rex Brothers with the bases loaded and one out, putting the lefty in a tough position.

Brothers showed why he's going to be a key part of the Rockies' bullpen going forward, though, as he induced a double play from the first batter he faced, Lance Berkman, to get out of the jam. Considering the position that White left him in, Brothers did a nice job of salvaging the situation.

After Brothers came through to prevent the Cardinals from blowing things open, the Rockies offense came back and tied things up with a sacrifice fly from Jordan Pacheco. Colorado has mustered just seven hits so far on the day, plus three walks from Todd Helton, but Pacheco has led the effort with two hits and two RBI.

The Colorado Rockies are about to close out the middle set of a three-series homestand at Coors Field, but they certainly want to end the current five-game losing streak they have there. Having dropped the first two games to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Rockies play them one more time before hosting the San Francisco Giants.

With back spasms sidelining Christian Friedrich from Thursday's start, the Rockies turn to Alex White (2-6, 6.45 ERA), who has spent the last month with the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox. White lost his first three starts and then lost his last three before being demoted. He has a 3.71 ERA in 11 Triple-A starts, but that moderate success has not translated to the majors.

The Cardinals turn to Lance Lynn (13-4, 3.42 ERA) for the sweep. He allowed six runs in his last start, a 9-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs. To start July, Lynn threw six shutout innings against the Rockies. Colorado is hoping for more of Lynn's recent performance than what they saw from him in St. Louis one month ago.

The Colorado Rockies are now losers of five straight and seven in a row at Coors Field after dropping Wednesday evening's contest to the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-6. Former Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday wielded the big stick with two home runs, a two-run shot in the first inning and a three-run blast in the seventh inning that tipped the scales in favor of his team, 6-5 at the time.

The Rockies did most of their damage less one run during the sixth inning. The team hit four consecutive extra-base hits to go up 4-3. Andrew Brown started things off with a double and then scored on Jordan Pacheco's double. Tyler Colvin followed with his second triple of the night and plated Pacheco. That paved the way for a Ramon Hernandez RBI double. Later in the inning, Eric Young Jr. doubled in the final Rockies' run of the game for a 5-3 lead.

Josh Rutledge hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season, in the bottom of the ninth.

Drew Pomeranz (ND, 5.13 ERA) made the start for the Rockies and allowed three in four innings. In addition to the two-run Holliday home run, Pomeranz allowed a Tyler Green RBI double. Rex Brother was charged with two of the three runs on Holliday's second homer, but Matt Belisle had relieved him to face the outfielder. Matt Reynolds allowed a run on a wild pitch and Carlos Torres allowed the other two runs on a fielder's choice and what turned into an inning-ending double play in the ninth.

Jake Westbrook (10-8, 3.79 ERA) allowed five runs in six innings for the Cardinals' 56th win of the season.

The Rockies (37-65, 20-34 home) close out this series on Thursday night with <strike>Christian Friedrich</strike> Alex White on the mound.
