The Colorado Rockies have been without infielder Chris Nelson for over a week since he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an irregular heartbeat. On Wednesday night, Nelson was cleared to resume baseball activities, reports the Denver Post's Troy Renck. He will spend a few days working on his conditioning before actually starting those baseball activities.

Nelson is hitting .256/.324/.411 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 58 games. He's played 45 games at third base, starting 26 of them. This is his third year appearing the majors, having been drafted with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2004 draft. Originally a shortstop, Nelson moved off the position as a result of Troy Tulowitzki's presence.

The Colorado Rockies have yet to win a series during the second half of the season, but after Wednesday night's 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks they still haven't been swept, either.

Jeff Francis (3-2, 4.97 ERA) pitched six-plus innings for the victory and stretched his pitch count to 97. He allowed both runs on home runs, one to Jason Kubel in the first inning and the other to Miguel Montero to start the seventh inning (which promptly led to his removal from the game). He struck out four and gave up a total of five hits.

Marco Scutaro provided most of the offense for the Rockies with his three-RBI night. He hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning after Dexter Fowler led off the game with a triple. With the game tied at one in the third inning, Scutaro doubled to left field to score two runs.

Rookie Wilin Rosario put another run on the board in the fourth inning when he hit his 16th home run of the season.

Adam Ottavino, Matt Belisle and Rafael Betancourt kept Arizona hitless over the remaining three innings of the game. Betancourt did allow a walk, but it proved of little consequence.

The Rockies (37-60, 17-31 away) are off on Thursday, but they return to Coors Field on Friday to host the Cincinnati Reds.

The Colorado Rockies have struggled mightily since the All-Star break, and a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds likely won't offer much relief. The Reds are leading the NL Central at the moment, and boast the second best run differential in the National League. Colorado, meanwhile, is just trying to avoid finishing with the worst record in baseball. The Rockies have a higher winning percentage than the Houston Astros, and exactly no one else.

The Rockies have announced the pitching rotation for the upcoming series, and the team is only throwing lefties. On Friday, Drew Pomeranz is scheduled to go. Colorado's 25-year old lefty Christian Friedrich will start on Saturday. Sunday will belong to Jonathan Sanchez, the 29-year old who is 1-7 this season with a 8.01 ERA and 2.08 WHIP.

Jonathan Herrera is gradually getting better. The Colorado Rockies' second baseman/third baseman hasn't played since July 15 thanks to a staph infection in his left wrist. Herrera's stint on the 15-day disabled list started the following day. Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports the 28-year old Venezuelan is about to start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin will throw a bullpen session on Thursday in front of coaches, as Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports. If the session goes well, Chacin will likely begin a minor legue rehab assignment soon, bringing him one step closer to returning to the big leagues.

It's been a really rough year for Chacin, who was viewed as the Rockies' de facto ace coming into the season. After battling through five awful starts with the Rockies, the 24-year-old was demoted to Triple-A and ultimately placed on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

Slowly but surely, Chacin has worked his way back into playing condition, as he already threw a successful bullpen session on Monday. Over the 2010-2011 seasons, Chacin posted a 3.48 ERA with 288 strikeouts and 148 walks in 331.1 innings pitched.

It has not been a kind trip to the Arizona desert for the Colorado Rockies. After losing the first two games of the three game series, Colorado hopes to avoid the sweep.

They will send veteran lefthander Jeff Francis (2-2, 5.24) to the mound. Francis had a rough outing against the San Diego Padres, surrendering five earned runs in five innings, but has been Colorado's most consistent starter this season since signing as a free agent in early June.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will send Trevor Cahill (8-8, 3.77) to the mound, looking to keep their slim postseason chances alive. They have won five straight games (and seven of their last 10) and currently sit only six games back of the division leading San Francisco Giants -- and only four games back of the National League Wild Card.

Make it six losses in the last seven games for the Colorado Rockies. On Tuesday at Chase Field, the Diamondbacks scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the seventh to defeat Colorado 6-2 and drop the team to 36-60 on the season. The win moves Arizona to 49-48.

The Rockies took the lead in the fourth when Michael Cuddyer clubbed a homer off of Arizona starter Joe Saunders. Cuddyer would homer again for the Rockies in the sixth inning, and now has now gone deep 14 times on the season.

The Diamondbacks got RBI doubles by Stephen Drew and Willie Bloomquist in the fourth, and then a two-run homer by Chris Young in the fifth. Miguel Montero's two RBI single in the seventh put an exclamation point on the Arizona victory.
