The Colorado Rockies lost 9-6 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon in a game that saw all 15 runs cross the plate before the end of the fifth inning. Through the first five frames, fans were treated to an absolute slugfest, but both teams saw their bullpens tighten things up near the end.

The Rockies jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first three runs of the game before ultimately taking a 5-1 lead after two innings. Colorado starter Jeremy Guthrie promptly blew that lead, giving up five runs in the third inning, before the Rockies tied the game back up, 6-6, in the fourth inning.

Home runs would ultimately end the Rockies' bid to take the three-game series, though, as reliever Matt Reynolds allowed homers to Casey McGehee and Rod Barajas in the fifth inning. Those homers would prove to provide the margin of victory, as the Pirates would hold on for the 9-6 win.

Andrew Brown had an impressive day while batting clean up, notching three hits and two RBI to lead the Rockies offense. Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez both went deep for Colorado, as well.

After taking an early lead, the Colorado Rockies are now trailing 6-5 to the Pittsburgh Pirates through three innings of play at Coors Field on Wednesday afternoon. The wheels have come off for Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie once again, as he didn't even make it out of the third inning.

The Rockies actually scored the first three runs of the game en route to a 5-1 lead through two innings, but Guthrie proceeded to blow that lead fairly quickly. After getting two outs following a lead-off single in the third frame, Guthrie simply fell apart, facing six consecutive hitters without recording a single out.

A three-run homer by Pittsburgh's Garrett Jones proved to be particularly damaging, especially after the subsequent two hitters both got on base despite failing to hit the ball out of the infield. Guthrie just looked lost by the end, eventually being replaced by Matt Reynolds, who struck out Pirates pitcher James McDonald to end the inning.

Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez have led Colorado's offense so far on Wednesday, as each outfielder has contributed a homer and a walk, respectively. Jordan Pacheco has added a pair of singles, although his error in the top of the third inning proved to be costly.

The Colorado Rockies received a disappointing performance by rookie pitcher Christian Friedrich on Tuesday night, but are still in position for a series win against the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates.

Colorado sends Jeremy Guthrie (3-9, 6.14) to the mound in this afternoon showdown. The veteran righthander has had his share of struggles this season, but has a respectable 4.32 ERA in July since returning to the rotation.

The Pirates send young pitcher James McDonald (9-3, 2.59) looking to regain some momentum. Pittsburgh current;y finds themselves fighting for a playoff berth, and owe much of their success to success stories like McDonald who is enjoying a career best season. He struggled in his first post All Star Break start, an appearance against the Milwaukee Brewers that lasted less than five innings.

The Colorado Rockies loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but Tyler Colvin was out on a dropped third strike as the Pittsburgh Pirates earned a 6-2 victory on Tuesday night at Coors Field. The loss drops Colorado to 35-55, while Pittsburgh continues its surprising season by moving to 50-40.

Colorado held a 2-1 lead until Pittsburgh broke the game open by scoring four runs in the fifth. Pirates All-Star Andrew McCutchen finished with two hits and two runs including a solo homer in the fourth inning, his 22nd of the year.

Rockies starter Christian Friedrich allowed six hits and five runs over 4.2 innings to fall to 5-7 on the campaign. Erik Bedard picked up the win for the Pirates to improve to 5-10, while Joel Hanrahan nailed down his 25th save of the season to seal the victory.

Chris Nelson and Juan Nicasio were both sent to the disabled list by the Colorado Rockies in recent days because of known injuries. Nelson had a heart condition and Nicasio was sidelined for the rest of the year becuase of bone chips in his knee. The Rockies had also sent shortstop and second baseman Johnny Herrera to the DL, but the reasons for that one were unknown.

Troy Renck finally tweeted the reason on Tuesday, and it's a bit more interesting a problem than most people were likely expecting to hear. Herrera apparently has been sidelined because of a wrist infection caused by a watch:

There's no word on how long Herrera is expected to be out because of the odd 'injury'. No word on how exactly a watch could get his wrist infected, either.

The Colorado Rockies have started off their first two post-All-Star Break series on the right foot with victories against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates, but against the former the series went downhill after that, losing both games. On Monday, the Rockies escaped with a 5-4 walkoff victory after surrendering a 4-1 lead in the top half of the inning. Can they start a winning streak?

The Rockies turn to Christian Friedrich (5-6, 5.60 ERA), who is looking to win back-to-back games since he won three straight over late May and early June. On July 13, Friedrich picked up his fifth win of the season when he helped defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-2. He allowed one run in six innings and struck out seven batters.

Erik Bedard (4-10, 4.80 ERA) has lost three straight games entering this game. He has allowed at least four runs each time and has lasted fewer innings each time. In his last start, Bedard allowed five runs in 3.2 innings to the San Francisco Giants.
