The Colorado Rockies pulled off a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon after scoring three runs over the final two frames at Nationals Park. Trailing 3-1 entering the eighth inning, the Rockies took advantage of a pair of pitching miscues to stun the crowd in D.C.

With Sean Burnett relieving Jordan Zimmermann in the eighth, the Rockies immediately began their comeback with a leadoff solo home run from Eric Young Jr. Burnett then proceeded to give up a pair of singles before being pulled in favor of Mike Gonzalez. Gonzalez blew the lead on a wild pitch before striking out three straight batters to end the inning.

Wild pitches would only prove to be more costly for Washington in the ninth inning, when the Rockies scored the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch from Tyler Clippard. The Nationals put two runners in scoring position with two outs in the bottom frame, but Rafael Betancourt finished off his 15th save of the season.

The Colorado Rockies are trailing 2-1 to the Washington Nationals through six innings of play on Sunday afternoon as they look to take the rubber match of the three-game series. Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann had allowed just three hits so far but Jeremy Guthrie has pitched nearly as well in keeping the game close.

Making his second start since returning to the rotation, Guthrie has allowed just two runs on six hits over the first six frames. Both of the runs came on one key mistake, too, when All Star shortstop Ian Desmond smacked his 17th homer of the season to give the Nationals the lead.

In addition to his homer, Desmond has also reached on error and stolen a base. Rockies catcher Wil Nieves hit the sacrifice fly that initially gave Colorado the lead, but he's allowed three stolen bases already and the Nationals have only had seven base-runners.

The New York Mets view Colorado Rockies catcher Ramon Hernandez as a salary dump and won't offer much in terms of talent, as Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. The Mets have been searching for a right-handed hitter that can tandem at catcher with lefty-swinging Josh Thole.

Sherman says that the Mets have Hernandez at the top of their wish list, but they won't give up much other than taking on the catcher's contract. Hernandez is currently in the first year of a two-year contract worth $6.4 million, so the deal would allow Colorado to dump millions even if they can't land a decent prospect.

The Rockies reportedly "really like" a pair of the Mets' minor leaguers, center fielder Matt Den Dekker and reliever Josh Edgin, but Sherman notes that both players could help the team somewhat soon and GM Sandy Alderson has stated an aversion to trading those kinds of players.

The 2012 season wasn't supposed to go this way for the Colorado Rockies. They weren't supposed to be this ... bad. At 32-52, the Rockies are tied with the Chicago Cubs for the worst record in the major leagues. After defeating Stephen Strasburg on Friday, the Rockies' offense was stymied by Gio Gonzalez and the Washington bullpen.

Sunday offers one last chance for the Rockies to win before the All-Star break commences. Jeremy Guthrie (3-8, 6.28 ERA) has been much maligned for his performance this season, but after a two-week stint in the team's bullpen he returned to the rotation on July 4. He did take the loss in a 4-1 decision, but he allowed just two runs in six innings.

Jordan Zimmermann (5-6, 2.70 ERA) takes the Nationals in the All-Star break as a winner in his last two games and looking for a third straight victory. In Colorado on June 27, Zimmermann threw seven innings of one-run ball against the Rockies for his fourth win of the season. He then followed that up with two runs allowed against the San Francisco Giants in six innings. He struck out seven.

This game is scheduled for first pitch at 11:35 a.m. MT. ROOT Sports and 850 KOA have the broadcasts.

The Colorado Rockies failed to follow up on Friday night's victory against the Washington Nationals with another one on Saturday. They lost this afternoon contest, 4-1.

After four innings of play, the teams were tied at 1-1 due to an Ian Desmond home run in the second inning and a Jordan Pacheco sacrifice fly in the fourth. Then in the sixth inning, Ryan Zimmerman broke the tie with a single to deep center field to score Danny Espinosa and move Bryce Harper to third base. Harper then scored on a wild pitch by Josh Roenicke. Zimmerman advanced to second on the same play on Wilin Rosario's throwing error. Several batters later, Roenicke committed a throwing error, allowing Zimmerman to score.

Jeff Francis (2-2, 5.19 ERA) took the loss after allowing three runs in five-plus innings of work. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez (12-3, 2.92 ERA) picked up the victory after throwing six innings of one-run ball. He struck out six and held the Rockies to three hits.

The Rockies (32-52) close out the first half of the season with a Sunday afternoon contest between Jeremy Guthrie and Jordan Zimmermann.
