The recently killed contract extension talks between OL Ryan Clady and the Denver Broncos appears to have died as a result of a dispute over the first three years. Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports the two sides could not agree on the financial figures of the first three, guaranteed years.

Clady's rookie contract ends following the 2012 NFL season, and though the sides could not agree in the 2012 offseason, they expect to continue contract talks following the season:

"Although we want to reach an extension with Ryan, we are unable to do so at this time," John Elway, the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations, told the Denver Post after negotiations broke off Monday. "Now, our complete focus as an organization must turn toward having a successful 2012 season."

With training camp underway, the Denver Broncos and offensive tackle Ryan Clady have decided to end their contract extension talks, reports Mike Klis of the Denver Post. Thus ends roughly two months of negotiations to give Clady his second NFL contract, as his rookie contract ends at the conclusion of the upcoming 2012 season.

Clady, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, has been a rock on the left side of the line and will undoubtedly command a significant deal on the open market should he hit there in March. However, the Broncos would likely use the franchise tag on him, giving him a one-year tender that would be worth nearly $10 million.

The Broncos used its franchise tag on kicker Matt Prater this past offseason and reached a four-year contract with him in early July. Denver had reportedly offered Clady a five-year, $50 million deal, but negotiations did not progress beyond that.

With training camp underway, ending the negotiations ends one possible distraction.

As one of the elite offensive lineman in the NFL, it should come as no surprise that Ryan Clady is looking for a significant contract offer from the Denver Broncos. After little ground being made up between the two sides this offseason, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos are prepared to make a significant offer:

The Broncos have offered Clady a five-year, $50 million contract extension with $28 million guaranteed, according to an NFL source.

The $10 million a year average would make Clady one of the league's five highest-paid offensive tackles. He is scheduled to make $3.5 million this year, which ranks only 31st among NFL offensive tackles.

While the contract offer is significant, Klis also reports that Clady and his agent may be looking for more than what was offered:

The Denver Broncos know that the only way that Peyton Manning can make the contributions necessary to compete for a Super Bowl is to make sure that he has the time to make every throw. According to the Denver Post, the Broncos are making sure this is the case, as they have opened contract discussions with Pro Bowl LT Ryan Clady:

The Broncos have opened contract-extension talks with Ryan Clady, according to several NFL sources.

The left tackle is in the final year of his deal that will pay him $3.5 million in 2012. The franchise tag for left tackles this season was $9.4 million.

While the Broncos and Clady's agent are talking, it may be a while before the two sides are close to an agreement.

The Broncos' first-round pick, No. 12 overall, in the 2008 NFL draft, Clady almost immediately became one of the league's best at one of the game's most pivotal positions.

Denver Broncos offensive tackle Ryan Clady is in line for an extension this summer.

The Denver Broncos have had a rock at left tackle since the 2008 season: Ryan Clady. He's started in 64 out of 64 possible regular season games and two playoff games. That's even after partially tearing a patellar tendon in April 2010, which put the start of that season in jeopardy (he proved a fast healer). Now, Clady's rookie contract is set to end after he makes $3.5 million this season; however, the team is expected to open contract negotiations with Clady this summer, reports the Denver Post.

Clady will anchor a line once again that features Zane Beadles, J.D. Walton and Orlando Franklin. Chris Kuper, he of the gruesome dislocated ankle and broken leg, is progressing nicely during the offseason. Walton would have lost his starting center spot had Jeff Saturday joined the team, but he chose the Packers over the Broncos.
