According to Troy Renck of The Denver Post, the Colorado Rockies received an encouraging sign from injured righty SP Jeremy Guthrie on Thursday. Renck reports the recent acquisition made another step towards a healthy return to the rotation:

Guthrie has started four games in the 2012 MLB season, but has struggled thus far to find his rhythm.

The Rockies traded for Guthrie in the transaction that sent SP Jason Hammel and RP Matt Lindstrom to the Baltimore Orioles. He has pitched over 175 innings for five straight seasons, crossing beyond 200 IP in the past four, but in 2012 he has 10 walks to only 5 strikeouts with 4 home runs allowed.

On Wednesday night, Colorado Rockies pitcher Jorge De La Rosa began a rehab stint with the Advanced-A level Modesto Nuts. De La Rosa is making his way back from last May's torn ulnar collateral ligament and Tommy John surgery on his left elbow.

De La Rosa began the night by allowing a leadoff single, but he followed that up with a swinging strikeout for Eric Groff. The suspect Modesto defense reared its ugly head for Modesto when Cristhian Adames committed a fielding error on a ball hit by Chris Owings. However, Adames made up for that by starting a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The second inning went smoother with Bobby Borchering called out on strikes and Raywilly Gomez swinging for the third strike. De La Rosa did walk Keon Broxton, but Carter Bell flied out to end the inning. The third inning began with Ryan LaPensee called out on strikes. Groff singled on a line drive in between a ground out and a fly out.

De La Rosa would have stayed in longer, but he was hit on the wrist by a line drive during the third inning, reports Brian VanderBeek.

Overall, De La Rosa threw 44 pitches, 28 for strikes, and reached 94 m.p.h. on the gun, according to VanderBeek.

VanderBeek also reports that De La Rosa should make his next start on Monday. The Nuts will look for a second victory with De La Rosa on the mound after winning Wednesday's game against the Visalia Rawhide, 10-1. De La Rosa received a no-decision, allowing Nick Schnaitmann to pick up his first 'W' of the season.

The Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-5, thanks to a three-run walk-off homer by Jason Giambi, but that only came after the team blew a two-run lead in the top of the ninth inning. The Rockies bullpen actually blew the team's lead twice in the final two innings, but the offense came through with enough firepower in the end.

After leading 2-1 going into the eighth inning, Matt Belisle and Rex Brothers gave up one run apiece in that frame to put L.A. ahead 3-2. The Rockies responded in the bottom of the eighth inning with three runs, taking a 5-3 lead, but closer Rafael Betancourt blew the save on a two-run double by Dee Gordon.

Moving to the in the bottom of the ninth, Dodgers reliever Jamey Wright had some issues with command early in the inning, walking the first two guys to came up to the plate. Those mistakes put Rockies in a position to put the game away without doing much. After a sacrifice by Jonathan Herrera, the Dodgers pulled Wright in favor of lefty Scott Elbert, who promptly gave up the walk-off shot to Giambi.

Carlos Gonzalez was the star for Colorado on Wednesday, hitting two homers off reigning NL Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw, including a key two-run bomb in the eighth inning. Matt Kemp was 1-for-2 with a single and three walks, including two of the intentional variety.

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin is expected to start on Monday night against San Diego despite his recent struggles because of a lack of alternatives, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

Chacin simply hasn't looked like his usual self this season with significantly decreased velocity, but the options to replace him aren't ready to move up to the majors yet.

Alex White, Tyler Chatwood and Christian Friedrich are all potential candidates to take over for Chacin, but each needs a little more time, according to Rockies’ management.

All three are currently in the minor leagues working out some things out after having less-than-ideal springs. White pitched on Tuesday for Triple-A Sacramento and struggled with command, while the less-experienced Friedrich has looked better but he's still needs reps. Chatwood is still building arm strength after starting the season in the bullpen.

The Colorado Rockies play the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon, looking to avoid losing its third series in a row. The Rockies could have taken the series on Tuesday night had they completed a comeback against the Dodgers, but they ultimately lost the game, 7-6.

Wednesday's contest will be a battle between young lefties: one established, one looking to make a name for himself. The former, Drew Pomeranz (0-1, 5.40 ERA), takes the mound for the Rockies. Pomeranz pitched just four innings in his April 27 start after suffering left forearm tightness. He allowed just two runs before the flood gates opened in what concluded as a Rockies' 18-9 victory over the New York Mets.

Clayton Kershaw (2-0, 1.78 ERA) enters this contest on a two-game winning streak, allowing just two runs over the 15 innings thrown in those two starts. He has struck out 15 batters during this stretch as well. Kershaw is 3-3 with a 5.88 ERA in nine career starts at Coors Field
