The Colorado Avalanche won't be represented in the 2012 NHL All Star Game, but rookie Gabriel Landeskog has been selected as one of the rookies to participate with Team Chara in the weekend's events. Both teams were drafted for the game on Thursday night by their respective captains, and six rookies apiece are selected for each team as well.

Landeskog, 19, was the second overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Avalanche. He has 10 goals and 16 assists so far this season in 51 games with Colorado. He's fifth on the team in goals scored and fourth in points.

While the players selected in the normal phase of the draft compete in the actual All Star Game itself, the rookies will not be competing. Instead Landeskog will be among the rookies participating in the All Star Skills Challenge. Other rookies on Team Chara include Buffalo's Luke Adam, Montreal's Raphael Diaz, Ottawa's Colin Greening, Vancouver's Cory Hodgson and Columbus' Ryan Johansen.

Thursday night at 8 PM ET, the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft takes place with team captains D Zdeno Chara and RW Daniel Alfredsson -- of the blue and red teams respectively -- selecting from a pool of 100 All-Stars for the 2012 NHL All-Star Games.

This is the second year the league will conduct its NHL player draft, and with the new format, the fans vote in six players to join the pool of All-Stars who are otherwise selected by the league. The All-Stars then vote among themselves to elect two captains, who then pick the rosters for the All-Star Game and Skills Competition in a fantasy draft.

Colorado's first-round pick Gabriel Landeskog is one of 12 NHL rookies who received an invitation to participate in the Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition during All-Star weekend in Ottawa, Canada.

The 2012 NHL All-Star selections have been announced, but no member of the Colorado Avalanche has earned a selection. Even so, Colorado's first-round pick (No. 2 overall) in the 2011 Early Draft, Gabriel Landeskog, is one of 12 NHL rookies who received an invitation to participate in the Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition during All-Star weekend in Ottawa, Canada.

Landeskog leads the Avalanche in plus/minus so far this season (+9), and is currently fifth on the team in total points. The skills competition will take place on Saturday January 28 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, at 5:00 p.m. MT on NBC. It comes as a bit of a surprise that the team's leading scorer, Ryan O'Reilly, didn't make the list of 36 All-Stars for the 2012 roster, so expect some reaction on that decision to show up at SB Nation's Avalanche blog Mile High Hockey in the very near future.
