The Denver Broncos let former defensive coordinator Dennis Allen leave for the Oakland Raiders' head coaching position and that was apparently enough coaches for the team to let leave from within the division. The Broncos denied the Raiders' request to allow linebackers coach Richard Smith to interview for Oakland's defensive coordinator position, reports ESPN.com.

Smith had been the top in-house candidate for the Broncos' vacant defensive coordinator position once Allen left for the Raiders. However, that job went to Jack Del Rio, a former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and a defensive coordinator under John Fox in Carolina during the 2002 season.

Smith is still the linebackers coach for the Broncos, but, as a former defensive coordinator himself, will likely be a candidate for other coordinator positions next year.

The Denver Broncos didn't wait long to hire a new defensive coordinator following Dennis Allen leaving for the Oakland Raiders. Former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio has been hired, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Del Rio's name emerged almost immediately once it appeared Allen was going to bolt for the Raiders. Del Rio was considered one of the top candidates along with linebackers coach Richard Smith. Del Rio was previously a defensive coordinator for John Fox with the Carolina Panthers in 2002. After one year on the job, Del Rio then became the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Broncos have now had seven different defensive coordinators in seven seasons.

John Elway went on the radio Friday and said that the Denver Broncos will consider promoting current linebackers coach Richard Smith to defensive coordinator.

Elway cited Smith's familiarity with the organization as one plus:

"He knows everyone, so that's one of the positives of hiring him, but we have to look at the big picture on every (candidate)," John Elway told KDSP radio Friday

Smith has NFL coaching experience that dates back to the late 1980s, and he has served as a defensive coordinator before: he Miami's DC in 2005 and Houston's DC from 2006 to 2008. He also has been working with John Fox since 2009.

According to the team's official Twitter, the new coach of the black and silver will have an introductory press conference on Monday:

Coach Allen spent one season as the Broncos' defensive coordinator after serving five seasons as the assistant defensive line coach and later the defensive backs coach for the New Orleans Saints. The Broncos defense was 15th best in the league in touchdowns allowed and 22nd in yards allowed in 2011.

Allen follows the previous coach Hue Jackson, who was relieved of his duties after Al Davis's death prompted the Davis family to hire a general manager -- Reggie McKenzie from the Green Bay Packers.

The Broncos will be hiring their fifth defensive coordinator in as many seasons after Dennis Allen was named as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

Del Rio has a history with Broncos head coach John Fox, having been the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers under Fox in 2002 before he was hired to be the head coach in Jacksonville. Prior to that, Del Rio spent three years coaching linebackers for the Baltimore Ravens. The Broncos have yet to accelerate their search for a defensive coordinator, but Del Rio, who is expected to be a hot commodity around the NFL this offseason, is a strong candidate.

In Allen's lone season as defensive coordinator in Denver, the Broncos finished 20th in total defense and 24th in scoring defense. Prior to coaching in Denver, he'd spent several years as a defensive assistant with New Orleans.

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie has not settled on anyone yet for the vacant head coaching position, refuting earlier reports that he was already negotiating a contract with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. According to Paul Gutierrez of CSN Bay Area:

"I will meet with Dennis Allen tonight," McKenzie said during the South team's Senior Bowl workout at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. "And after tonight, depending on our conversation …that's when."

Gutierrez goes on to say that after this interview that McKenzie will determine whether or not to offer the position to Allen. McKenzie isn't ruling out that this could happen on Tuesday night, but then McKenzie might just be keeping a poker face up for this and has already decided on Allen. We'll see how this all turns out in several hours or maybe days.

Should Dennis Allen be hired by the Oakland Raiders for its vacant head coaching position, the Denver Broncos will be looking for its seventh defensive coordinator in seven years. For a defense that finally turned corners in 2011 after years of disappointment, another change could prove to be costly. But if Jack Del Rio is brought in that could very well be a positive. Over at 850 KOA, Dave Krieger believes Del Rio, former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach, could be a potential candidate for the defensive coordinator position.

Del Rio was Fox's defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2002 before taking over the Jaguars. It would provide some measure of continuing the John Fox way. But so would Richard Smith, another candidate Krieger suggests is possible for the Broncos. Smith has coached linebackers for the previous three years under Fox and has been a defensive coordinator in the past.

But first, Allen needs to head over to Oakland. We saw Mike McCoy's dalliance with the Miami Dolphins fall apart over hiring staff positions, so nothing is done yet with Allen.
