The Denver Nuggets have been getting their squad ready for the start of the NBA season, and on Wednesday Danilo Gallinari and rookie Kenneth Faried made some positive impressions with their play, while Ty Lawson continues his push for playing time with the first unit. Gallinari, acquired from the New York Knicks in the Carmelo Anthony trade last season, is a young forward looking for a breakout season, while rookie first-round pick Kenneth Faried is hoping to translate his college rebounding prowess to the NBA. Vic Lombardi of CBS 102.3FM in Denver spent some time watching the team scrimmage and came away with the following impressions:

With Nene now back in the fold on a five-year, $67 million deal, it is difficult to take the claim about Gallinari being the best player too seriously, but the good news is that there is some visual evidence of improvement from the young talent.

As for the point guard competition between Ty Lawson and crafty veteran Andre Miller, Aaron Lopez of Nuggets.com sees an early 60/40 split favoring Lawson, with additional potential to see both players on the floor at the same time. It will interesting to see how head coach George Karl handles the rotation with two diversely talented point guards at his disposal.

The Denver Nuggets have yet to make any big splashes in NBA free agency or the trade markets, but if they need to clear some cap space they may target power forward Al Harrington for an amnesty clause cut, according to the Denver Post. Harrington is due to make roughly $6 million in salary this season and isn't a particularly important piece to the long-term plans of the franchise either. Here is what Harrington had to say about the prospect of being cut:

"My thing is, at the end of day, it's a business," Harrington said. "The lockout taught us that once again. I understand that if Nene doesn't sign back, and it's an extremely young team, it might be time for me to go. Or it may not. The feeling I get is that I'm going to be here and they look for me to be a leader to the young guys."

via the Denver Post. If released through the amnesty provision, Harrington's salary will remain guaranteed money, but will also come off the Nuggets' salary cap. Then teams under the salary cap will be allowed to bid for Harrington in an auction-style process, and the winning team will be awarded Harrington's services. The value of the bid will offset that amount from what the Nuggets still owe Harrington under his current deal.

The Denver Nuggets brought 11 players into training camp and the one player who was not previously rumored to be there was UTEP Miners guard Julyan Stone. He signed a two-year, $1.1 million, according to Alex Kennedy of Hoops World.

Stone averaged 8.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 35 games as a senior. He made 51 percent of his shots, but he made just 2.9 shots on 5.8 attempts. However, he is an intriguing prospect for the Nuggets to look at during camp. He is 6 foot 7, 200 pounds and could play the point, shooting guard and small forward. He'll need to improve his shooting if he wants to stick around in the league.

The Nuggets are still waiting to see what happens with Arron Afflalo and Nene before dipping into the main free agent pool.

As Denver Nuggets training camp got underway on Friday afternoon, 11 players were there to participate, according to Benjamin Hochman: Chris Andersen, Kenneth Faried, Danilo Gallinari, Jordan Hamilton, Al Harrington, Kosta Koufos, Ty Lawson, Andre Miller, Timofey Mozgov, Cory Higgins and UTEP's Julyan Stone.

Among the first-year players are 2011 NBA draft picks Faried and Hamilton, who just signed deals with the team on Friday. Higgins, a camp invitee, averaged 16.1 points for the Colorado Buffaloes last season. Stone is a versatile guard with good size, though he wasn't much of a scorer at the college level.

Notably absent: Nene Hilario, who is exploring a number of options through free agency and is unlikely to return to the Nuggets.

Denver Nuggets training camp begins on Friday, as does free agency. Will the Nuggets surprise everyone this year?

Denver Nuggets training camp is just a few hours away. The first practice is expected to begin around 5:00 p.m. MT, according to the Denver Post's Benjamin Hochman. There was some brief speculation earlier in the week that camps would be delayed until Monday, but that never picked up much steam.

Several Nuggets players have already started to show up to the Pepsi Center to start working out. The Nuggets are going to be welcoming several new faces to the team this season once free agency starts, also on Friday. And the arrival of rookies Kenneth Faried and Jordan Hamilton should help give the Nuggets a new look in this iteration of the NBA.

Can the Nuggets be a surprise team this season and capture an elusive NBA title? The journey begins on Friday.
