For now, the Chicago Bears hold one of the NFC Wild Card slots with a 7-5 record. However, they will likely move out of that position with a loss against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. That would makes reports about Jay Cutler returning to the team not until after the regular season rather disappointing. But that's what ESPN's Adam Schefter reports: Cutler is unlikely to play during the regular season again.

Caleb Hanie replaced Cutler and has shown that he is not a quarterback who will win games for the Bears and can also lose them for the team. He has thrown three interceptions in each of his two starts.

The Bears did attempt to pick up Kyle Orton off waivers when the quarterback requested his release. However, the Kansas City Chiefs put in a claim and received the quarterback. Orton injured his finger last week when he took his first snap with the Chiefs.

Now the Bears and the Chiefs are teetering on the edge of lost seasons.

Don't laugh, but here's what Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said about his new starting quarterback, Caleb Hanie (via Brad Biggs):
↵
↵
Brian Urlacher on Caleb Hanie: "He's going to be able to move around in the pocket a little bit, maybe a little Tebow offense."
↵
↵
However, head coach Lovie Smith plans to stick with the offense Mike Martz has in place for the Bears, which he announced at Monday's press conference.
↵
There's only one Tim Tebow and Caleb Hanie isn't him. Often imitated, never successfully replicated. Or something like that, I guess.
↵

Jay Cutler's return to Denver, CO, won't be happening on Dec. 11 if reports of a broken thumb on his throwing hand are true. Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that two sources believe Cutler is lost for the season, which has six games remaining. Jensen, though, writes that the team is "expected to err on the side of caution" with Cutler after surgery on his thumb. Recovery from surgery could take 6-7 weeks, putting him in line to return for the regular season finale or for the playoffs (should the Chicago Bears win a wild card spot).

With Cutler out, the Bears appear ready to go with Caleb Hanie, who gained notoriety during the NFC Championship game when he relieved Cutler and the since-retired Todd Collins. Hanie will make his return to Colorado, as he quarterbacked the Colorado St. Rams from 2004-2007. He was 495-of-811 for 6,337 yards and 39 touchdown passes with the Rams.

In his NFL career, Hanie is 8-of-14 for 66 yards and an interception in the regular season.

Former Colorado St. Rams quarterback Caleb Hanie could start for the Chicago Bears if reports of Jay Cutler's broken thumb hold true.

The Chicago Bears might be in dire straits if reports of Jay Cutler's broken thumb on his throwing hand are true. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Cutler will need more tests to determine his availability, but it could be a season-ending injury. Cutler broke the thumb on an interception throw.

If this holds true, the Denver Broncos won't face Jay Cutler in his return to the Mile High City on Sunday, Dec. 11. In his place, based on the current state of the roster, former Colorado St. Rams quarterback Caleb Hanie would be in line for the start. Many will recall Hanie coming in during the NFC Championship game back in January when he came in as the team's No. 3 quarterback once Cutler and Todd Collins were unable to go or do anything. Hanie did complete 13 of 20 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss.

The Bears could look to sign a free agent like David Garrard, but until Cutler's status becomes definitive there's no clue on how the Bears will pursue the situation.
