The Colorado State Rams made it a sweep in this week's Mountain West players of the week awards. It, however, wasn't a clean sweep since the offensive player of the week award was split between two players.
↵
Colorado State running back Chris Nwoke was named co-offensive player of the week with New Mexico wide receiver Deon Long. Nwoke scored the game-tying and the overtime game-winning touchdown for the Rams in their 35-34 double overtime victory against Utah State. Long, who saw head coach Mike Locksley fired on Sunday, had 378 total yards of offense, including 209 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He also had a 98-yard kickoff return to start the game.
↵
Also receiving player of the week honors was Colorado State's Shaquil Barrett and Tanner Hedstrom. The former recorded 14 tackles, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and a sack. Hedstrom, the long snapper, recovered two failed punt attempts, including one that set up Nwoke's game-tying touchdown.
↵

Despite being out played and out gained in Saturday night's game, Colorado State defeated Utah State in double overtime, 35-34. In the first overtime period Utah State used running back Robert Turbin to get the touchdown, in fact Turbin ran the ball three times to account for all 25 yards.

Colorado State then responded by using the same Utah State philosophy by running Chris Nwoke on each play--except for the seven yard touchdown pass to Crockett Gillmore. Then in overtime Colorado State was on offense again and scored on two plays. They were assisted by a pass interference call that went against Utah State. Colorado State scored on a two0yard Chris Nwoke run.

Utah State also responded in the second overtime by again using running back Robert Turbin, who ran 25 yards on one play. Then Utah State decided to go for two and the win. Utah State elected to run Turbin, but instead of running up the middle, the play was an outside run that Colorado State was able to stop.

Colorado State was out played by Utah State, but the Rams got the win and that is all what matters. However it does help that Utah State turned the ball over four times and the biggest turnover was the muffed punt at the end of the fourth quarter. The Rams used that to score a touchdown, forcing overtime.

The Colorado St. Rams trailed nearly the entire game against the Utah St. Aggies and the Ram offense has underperformed all day. Colorato State has not been able to move the ball well against Utah State defense, and the reason that Colorado State is in this game is because of four turnovers by Utah State.

Colorado State's Pete Thomas has only 100 yards passing on 14-for-26 passing and the running game has not done much either as they have 92 yards so far with Raymond Carter leading Colorado State with 69 yards.

On Colorado State's final drive they were moving the ball well in the passing game, but two personal foul penalties pushed Colorado State to a 4th and 30 at the Utah State 49 yard line, so Colorado State decided to punt the ball and use their timeouts to try to get the ball back.

However, on the punt Utah State's Eric Moats called a fair catch, but had to dive and fumbled the punt and Colorado State's Tanner Hedstrom recovered the fumbled. The Rams then went down and scored a touchdown on a Chris Nwoke one-yard touchdown run. Then Colorado State went on to make the two-point conversion to tie the game at 21 after a false start penalty.

The Colorado St. Rams take on the Utah St. Aggies tonight and the Rams are looking to rebound after their loss to the Colorado Buffaloes and this matchup will provide a good opportunity to do so. Over at OddShark.com the line opened at 6.5 but has since ballooned to 11.5 points.

That is a large swing since Utah State is 1-1 and while they had an excellent chance to upset Auburn in week one they followed that up by drubbing Weber State, and FCS team, 54-17.

Here are some expert predictions for Saturday nights game and they are a mixed bag.

Mitch Light, Athlon Sports:

Utah State has put up some gaudy numbers in its two games (split with Auburn and Weber State). The Aggies, led by true freshman quarterback Chuckie Keeton and junior tailback Robert Turbin, rank fifth in the nation in total offense. Colorado State looks to be improved in 2011, but Utah State is the better team.

Utah State 30, Colorado State 17

Mike Huguenin, Rivals:

This is one of 10 Mountain West/WAC regular-season matchups this season. This is the 68th meeting in this series but the first since 1997. Utah State is looking for its first 2-1 start since 1997.

Colorado State 34, Utah State 29

College Football News:

Yes, the Utah State offense really is that good, and it'll show why with a great first half that'll put the game away almost immediately. Colorado State will try to bomb its way back into the game, and Thomas will throw for over 300 yards, but he won't be able to keep up the pace.

Utah State 34, Colorado State 17

Colorado State gets a big lift with getting back wide receiver Byron Steele back in the lineup, so I will say Colorado State 21, Utah State 20.

The Colorado State Rams look to pick things up after a loss to the Colorado Buffaloes last week. They face Utah State this weekend, the team that almost upset Auburn.

The 2011 Rocky Mountain Showdown wasn't much of one when all was said and done. The Colorado St. Rams stood defeated on Sports Authority Field at Mile High last Saturday. The Colorado Buffaloes had picked up a 28-14 victory over the Rams for Jon Embree's first win as a head coach.

For the Rams, this was the first loss the 2011 season. After a sloppy win over New Mexico and a crushing victory over Northern Colorado, the Buffs proved too much. The Rams might not have an easier time this week with a road game against the Utah State Aggies.

The Aggies played the Auburn Tigers to the brink on the road in Auburn, but two late touchdowns by the Tigers secured the victory. The Aggies shredded the ground for 227 yards and five touchdowns. With their defeat of Weber State two weeks ago, the Aggies are fourth in the nation with 333.5 yards per game. The Rams haven't been particularly strong on the ground, and last week they allowed Rodney Stewart a breakout game of 98 yards rushing.

Raymond Carter and Chris Nwoke have the Rams averaging 133 yards on the ground, but sophomore quarterback Pete Thomas is still looking for that breakout game of the season. He did throw three interceptions against Northern Colorado before the Buffs held him to 18-of-28 passing for 157 yards and no scores or interceptions last week.

Colorado State owns the series record at 35-30-2, but the last game between the two came in 1997. The Rams won that one and the two other contests (1994-95) that were played in the 90s.

This game kicks off at 6:00 p.m. MT and can be seen on ESPN3.
