The Week 1 Mountain West football players of the week were announced today and the defensive award went to Colorado State defensive lineman Nordly Capi who was all over the field making plays in their 14-10 win over New Mexico on Saturday. Here is the press release from the Mountain West:
↵
↵
Nordly Capi set a new NCAA single-game record with four forced fumbles in Colorado State's 14-10 victory at New Mexico. Capi's fourth forced fumble of the contest helped the Rams preserve their first conference victory. With nine seconds remaining and the Lobos positioned at the Ram 15 yard line, the Ocoee, Fla. native stripped New Mexico QB Tarean Austin and recovered the ball to wrap up CSU's first victory of 2011.The win also snapped an 11-game road losing streak. In total, Capi registered seven tackles (five solo), 4.5 tackles for loss (-27 yards), 3.5 sacks (-22), four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
↵
↵
These stats from the opener added up to be more stats than Capi accumulated in all of 2010 where he had only three total tackles on the season.

The first week of Mountain West play is in the books and the Mountain West with the rare conference game between Colorado State and New Mexico and then the rest of the league took part in non-conference games and went a combined 4-2.

• No. 11 Wisconsin Badgers 52, UNLV Rebels 10: The result was never in question as UNLV was a considerable underdog. The Wisconsin offense moved the ball at will as the UNLV defense had no answer against the run or passing game. The bright spot for UNLV was that they were fairly successful moving the ball but were just unable to do so when they were in Wisconsin territory. Also, first time starter Caleb Herring had two touchdowns pass and no interceptions, so there is that.

• Baylor Bears 50, TCU Horned Frogs 48: The shocker of the weekend. We knew TCU's defense was to take a step back, but 50 points was not expected. That 50 points was the most given up by a TCU defense since they gave up 70 points to Texas Tech in 2004. Baylor was able to beat the TCU corners at will and quarterback Robert Griffin III torched the TCU secondary for 358 yards and five touchdowns. TCU did make a valiant attempt by scoring 25 fourth quarter points but it was too little too late. The offense looked good with Casey Pachall taking over for Andy Dalton who had 251 yards, four touchdowns and one pick; plus he ran for 28 yards and another touchdown.

• Air Force Falcons 37, South Dakota Coyotes 20: A ho-hum victory for Air Force as they did what they were expected to do. They ran out to a 30 to 7 lead at the half before allowing South Dakota to score a few garbage time touchdowns. The surprise of the game was the emergence of wide receiver Mikel Hunter who rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown which was an 80 yard run on the first play from scrimmage and caught one pass for 55 yards and a touchdown.

• Colorado St. Rams 14, New Mexico Lobos 10: Even though New Mexico loss they seem to have turned a corner and have a potential star in the making in sophomore quarterback Tarean Austin who threw for 179 yards, one touchdown and rushed for another 57 yards on the ground. Austin plays reckless but he was able to extend plays, but he was not able to defeat Colorado State by himself. The player of the game was Colorado State defensive lineman Nordly Capi who sealed the win for Colorado State by forcing and recovering a fumble with less than 15 seconds left. On the day Capi had six tackles, 4.5 were for a loss, four forced fumbles while recovering one and 3.5 sacks.

• No. 5 Boise St. Broncos 35, No. 19 Georgia Bulldogs 21: The Boise State offensive and defensive line was the reason Boise State won this game. There is a reason that quarterback Kellen Moore was a Heisman trophy finalist last year. The Broncos were breaking in new receivers and were without a starter, but that did not matter as Moore went 28-34, 261 yards, three touchdowns and only one pick. Once Boise State went ahead 14-7 the game never seemed to be in doubt for Boise State.

• Wyoming Cowboys 35, Weber State Wildcats 32: This was a back and forth game as Wyoming had to come from behind to defeat Weber State. Wyoming was starting true freshman quarterback Brett Smith who went 21-34, 278 yards, three passing touchdowns and one rushing score. The most important score came on the game winning drive where Smith connected on a 9-yard TD pass on fourth down to sophomore receiver Robert Herron with 35 seconds left for the win.

• San Diego St. Aztecs 49, Cal Poly Mustangs 21: Another FBS vs. FCS game this week in the Mountain West and San Diego State took care of business. San Diego State quarterback threw four touchdowns passes and in the process became the Aztecs all time leader in touchdown passes. Running back Ronnie Hillman exploded for 189 yards on the ground and also contributed with two touchdowns in the blowout win.

Colorado State defensive lineman Nordly Capi forced and recovered a fumble which was set by Shaquil Barrett sacking New Mexico quarterback Tarean Austin in the closing seconds Saturday to preserve Colorado State's 14-10 victory over New Mexico.

This low scoring game that had three missed field goals, two by Colorado State and one by New Mexico. The missed kick by New Mexico was one of the worst shanks in a long time as the kick went about six feet in the air and bounced in the endzone. New Mexico got on the board first with a 33-yard James Aho field goal in the second quarter.

Colorado State then responded right away by marching down the field on a five play 69 yard drive that lated a quick 2:37 to score the go-ahead 33-yard touchdown pass by Pete Thomas to tight end Crockett Gillmore. New Mexico then responded in even quicker fashion by driving down the field in seven plays that encompassed 80 yards in 1:08 to take the lead into halftime.

The second half saw Colorado State's defense really step up. On their first defensive possession they forced a New Mexico fumble when the Lobos were in Ram territory. The fumble was forced and recovered by Davis Burl, but with the turnover recovery the Rams could not convert as they went three and out.

However, the Rams defense kept holding New Mexico's offense as they had three straight three and outs. The Rams offense did not do much better until their fourth quarter drive that proved to be the game winner. The Rams went 11 plays for 40 yards that ate up 5:39 of clock and had Chris Nwoke score the game winning touchdown on a two-yard touchdown run.

On the day Thomas who had a solid game on Saturday by gong 22-for-26 passing with 178 yards, a touchdown and no picks. Outside of the deep touchdown pass Thomas was completing passes to multiple receivers on mostly intermediate routes. Thomas was given more freedom in the offense and completed passes to nine different Rams.

Overall the Rams had their up and downs, but they do look improved from last year especially with the defensive pressure they were putting on against a much improved New Mexico team.

The Rams next week host Northern Colorado at 12 p.m. MT.

The Air Force Falcons picked up their first win of the season by defeating the South Dakota Coyotes, 37-20, on Saturday. It wasn't always the best game for the Falcons, but it was a way to get back into the game before next week's big matchup.

The Falcons jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first play of the game. Receiver Mikel Hunter took the ball on an 80-yard run for a touchdown. The Falcons waited until the end of the first quarter to score again, a Wes Cobb rushing touchdown.

After that, the offense became the Tim Jefferson show. The senior quarterback scored two rushing touchdowns twice in the final six minutes of the half. Then in the third quarter, Jefferson struck again. After the Falcons defense forced a three-and-out for the Coyotes, Jefferson connected with Mikel Hunter for a 55-yard touchdown reception on 3rd-and-2. That touchdown put the Falcons on the board with 37 points (Parker Herrington had a field goal and a missed extra point earlier).

The Coyotes, who scored on a touchdown pass in the second quarter, took control of the game in the fourth quarter, but were unable to overcome the Falcons. They scored a touchdown five seconds into the fourth quarter on a short rushing play and then put the ball into the end zone on a touchdown pass midway through the quarter. The last score came after Wes Cobb fumbled and lost the ball. Asher Clark, who rushed for 97 yards, also fumbled, but he picked it back up.

Jamil Cooks intercepted a Coyotes pass with less than three minutes to seal the game. Jefferson threw one of his two interceptions in the fourth quarter, but the Coyotes failed to take advantage of it.

The Falcons (1-0) stay home next week and face the TCU Horned Frogs, who lost to the Baylor Bears on Friday, 50-48.

The Mountain West is 0-2 so far during Week 1 play, but there are five games on schedule for Saturday. Can Boise State deliver a big win on the road?

The 2011 Mountain West Conference began play on Thursday with UNLV's 51-17 loss to Russell Wilson and the Wisconsin Badgers.
