Sixteen straight Sundays, sixteen straight losses for the Colorado Rockies. Despite a late comeback attempt, the Rockies lost, 3-2, to the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon. They split the four-game series at two games apiece.

Aaron Cook's lone blemish if his start was a two-run home run hit by Jonny Gomes in the second inning. Cook completed 6-2/3 innings, holding the Nationals to four hits. John Lannan kept the Rockies scoreless for the first six innings of the game, but then he encountered the seventh inning.

Lannan issued a leadoff walk to Jonathan Herrera before he was pulled from the game. Former Rockies reliever Ryan Mattheus came in and allowed an Eric Young Jr. single to center field. Both runners moved over a base on a Dexter Fowler sacrifice. Carlos Gonzalez hit into what should have been a ground ball out, but Michael Morse failed to come up with the ball properly, allowing Herrera to score. After Troy Tulowitzki single, Ty Wigginton singled in Young Jr. to tie the game. However, Seth Smith popped out to second base to end the threat.

Matt Belisle took the mound for the Rockies in the eighth inning and gave up a Danny Espinosa double. After Ryan Zimmerman grounded out and Morse was intentionally walked, Jayson Werth singled in the go-ahead run for the 3-2 lead. The Rockies could not come back from that, capped with Troy Tulowitzki striking out to end the game.

The Rockies (53-62, 28-31 home) visit the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.

After Saturday's 15-7 victory, the Colorado Rockies better hope they have some offense left in them on Sunday. They'll need it if they want to avoid their 16th straight loss on Sunday.

Aaron Cook (2-6, 5.34 ERA) will be on the mound for the Rockies in hopes of ending the bleeding on Sundays. Cook had a bit of a regression against the Phillies in his last start. Before that, Cook came up with seven scoreless innings against the Dodgers on the road. Against the Phillies in Colorado, Cook managed just four innings and allowed four runs on five hits. He is 0-2 on Sunday this season.

John Lannan (8-7, 3.65 ERA) pitched against the Rockies back in July during their series in Washington. However, Lannan's start was cut short due to a batted ball to his face. He left in the fourth inning, but the impact did not cause any serious injury. He defeated Atlanta in his last start, allowing three runs on nine hits in 6-2/3 innings. He struck out eight.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. MT.

The Colorado Rockies emerged with a 15-7 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night. It was an old-fashioned Coors Field slugfest as good pitching was hard to come by throughout the game.

The Rockies knocked around Livan Hernandez for nine runs in 3-2/3 innings. The Rockies broke things open in the third inning when Chris Iannetta scored as a result of a throwing error by Hernandez. Dexter Fowler followed with a two-run triple and Troy Tulowitzki had a sac fly for the early 4-0 lead.

Ty Wigginton (14) and Chris Iannetta (12) each hit a home run off of Hernandez, the latter a two-run shot, in the fourth inning. But that was just the start of the scoring that inning, as Carlos Gonzalez and Tulowitzki each had an RBI single and Eric Young Jr. scored on a wild pitch.

Jhoulys Chacin (9-8, 3.45 ERA) did have his share of troubles, allowing three runs in five innings. His habit of walking too many batters did show up, issuing five free passes. Greg Reynolds recently recalled after Juan Nicasio's broken neck came in during the sixth inning and allowed four runs, two on a Rick Ankiel home run. Michael Morse continued his hot hitting against the Rockies with an RBI single that inning, going 4-for-5 with three RBI in the game.

The Rockies came up with six more runs over the final three innings of the. Dexter Fowler drove in his third and fourth RBI of the game with a single in the seventh. Two runs in the eighth scored on a bases-loaded walk by Ian Stewart and on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Henry Rodriguez. Matt Belisle and Rafael Betancourt stopped the Nationals from countering with any more runs before Rex Brothers finished the game in the ninth inning.

The Rockies (53-61, 28-30 home) finish this series at 1:10 p.m. MT on Sunday. Aaron Cook and John Lannan are the scheduled starters.

The Colorado Rockies take the field on Saturday night knowing that Juan Nicasio is recovering from a broken neck after being hit in the head by a ball. The Rockies and Nationals have split the first two games of the series.

Jhoulys Chacin (8-8, 3.38 ERA) is coming off a strong effort against the Philadelphia Phillies. He received a no-decision in the Phillies' 4-3 victory, but he held them to just one run in 7-1/3 innings. He only struck out two, compensating by getting ground ball outs. With Ubaldo Jimenez gone, Chacin is now the ace of this staff.

Former Rockie Livan Hernandez (6-10, 4.08 ERA) was the Nationals' Opening Day starter. After a rough July, Hernandez held the Atlanta Braves to one run in six innings to pick up the victory. He is 4-7 with a 6.99 ERA in 18 career starts at Coors Field. Will the Rockies be able to take advantage of Hernandez's history at Coors?

Notes: Carlos Gonzalez returns to the lineup for the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies lost, 5-3, on Friday evening, but potentially they face an even bigger loss after Juan Nicasio left the game after a ball hit him in the face. In the top of the second inning, Ian Desmond hit a liner up the middle that Nicasio was unable to avoid. Nicasio couldn't get his glove up in time, either, and fell to the ground. He was attended to by medical personnel and taken to a nearby hospital.

Nicasio had allowed a two-run triple to Ryan Zimmerman in the first inning. The Nationals extended that lead to 4-0 by the end of the fifth inning. Rick Ankiel had an RBI single in the fourth inning and Michael Morse homered in the fifth.

The Rockies got to Jordan Zimmermann (7-9, 3.12 ERA) allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings and struck out eight. But Zimmermann was already out of the game when Chris Nelson and Ian Stewart hit RBI singles to score the runs in the sixth inning. Henry Rodriguez was the culprit for those two runs and the one Chris Iannetta (who went 3-for-4) added as well.

Michael Morse added his third hit of the night with an RBI single in the top of the ninth.

The Rockies (52-61, 27-30 home) continue this series at 6:10 p.m. MT on Saturday. Livan Hernandez and Jhoulys Chacin are the scheduled starters.

In a horrifying moment in the second inning of the Colorado Rockies' game with the Washington Nationals, Rockies pitcher Juan Nicasio was struck on the side of his head by a line drive ball off the bat of Ian Desmond. Nicasio brought his glove up to protect his head, but the ball struck before that. He fell face first to the ground and eventually wound up on his back.

Medical crews came out and stabilized his neck by putting a brace on him. After several minutes, he was placed on a stretcher and then put on a cart that took him off the field. Play resumed a few minutes later when Edgmer Escalona came into pitch for the Rockies.

We will have more on this developing situation as news comes out. For now, we hope for the best and await better news once he is taken care of at a local hospital.

Despite some late-inning hitting by Ryan Zimmerman, the Colorado Rockies snapped their losing streak on Thursday night when they defeated the Washington Nationals, 6-3. Esmil Rogers held the Nationals to one run in 5-2/3 innings to pick up his fifth win.

On Friday evening, Juan Nicasio (4-3, 3.95 ERA) will look to string together consecutive quality outings. In his last start, the bullpen blew a lead and cost the Rockies the game in an 8-3 loss to the Padres. Nicasio struck out a career high 10 batters in that game (nine was the previous high). He kept the Padres to two runs on five hits in seven innings before Rex Brothers and Matt Belisle gave up six runs in the bottom of the eighth. To start the second half of the season, Nicasio threw two starts of seven innings each and allowed just one total run. However, the Dodgers struck for five against him in the next start.

Jordan Zimmermann (6-9, 3.88 ERA) draws the start for the Nationals. He is coming off a start against the Mets, throwing six shutout innings, scattering seven hits and striking out six. In his two starts before that, he was tagged for six runs each time and both losses. However, Zimmermann did throw 6-1/3 scoreless innings against the Rockies in Washington back on July 10. He struck out six in the 2-0 victory.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. MT.

The Colorado Rockies didn't let their recent sweep by the Philadelphia Phillies keep them down in their series with the Washington Nationals. The Rockies picked up a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night on a solid effort by Esmil Rogers.

Rogers (5-1, 6.35 ERA) ran into a bit of trouble in the first inning when he allowed an RBI single after a leadoff base knock and a walk put two men on base. Michael Morse did the damage, but that was all the Nationals were able to do against Rogers. He pitched 5-2/3 innings, scattered seven hits and struck out six. He worked out of jams in the third and fifth innings when Ryan Zimmerman hit a double and a single, respectively.

The Rockies didn't get their first hit off of Ross Detwiler (1-1, 2.66 ERA) until the fourth inning, After Todd Helton worked a walk, Troy Tulowitzki moved him over to second on a single. A Ty Wigginton single scored Helton from second base, but a Chris Nelson single to right field was shallow and allowed for a throw at home plate, putting Tulowitzki out at the base.

Chris Iannetta led off the fifth inning with a double, moved to second on a Rogers sacrifice and came around to score on an Eric Young Jr. single. Tulowitzki followed in the sixth inning with his 21st home run of the season for a 3-1 lead.

In the eighth inning, former Rockies reliever Ryan Mattheus entered and allowed three runs. Nelson doubled in Todd Helton, who had reached on a walk. The bases were still loaded when Mattheus hit Iannetta to score a run and walked Young Jr. for a sixth run.

Huston Street came in for the bottom of the ninth and ran into problems. Brian Bixler hit into a fielder's choice, which wound up putting out Wilson Ramos at second base. Rick Ankiel singled to put men on first and second base. Ryan Zimmerman doubled in the two of them, but Street got Morse to fly out to end the game.

The Rockies (52-60, 27-29 home) continue the series on Friday at 6:40 p.m. MT. Jordan Zimmermann and Juan Nicasio are the expected starters.
