Even if a team were to change its mind and offer its first-round draft pick to the New York Giants for defensive end Osi Umenyiora, a recent development would likely stop a team from pulling that off. Umenyiora is claiming that he is sitting out of practice because of a sore knee, reports Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger.

Garafolo is quick to point out though that the Giants are staying away from that claimed injury. A Giants public relations statement is only mentioning that Umenyiora claims the injury. Supposedly, the injury is in the same knee that caused him to miss the 2008 season, and this injury could require surgery.

But this could all be an elaborate ruse. Certainly he could be injured, but it also provides cover for him as his sits out practice while he awaits a trade (which would appear unlikely if he really is seriously injured) or gets a new contract (which wouldn't happen if he is injured). This is far from over.

The New York Giants aren't trading defensive end Osi Umenyiora after the player's agent failed to find a team willing to give up a first-round pick for him. According to the New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano, five teams, one of which was the Denver Broncos, wouldn't offer more than a second-round pick for the defensive end who is seeking to be paid as one of the top at his position.

There was one report that the Giants had lowered their demand to a second-round pick, but that has turned out to be wrong. Vacchiano reports that the Bears and the Patriots had started asking about Umenyiora when that false report emerged.

The Giants could always return to trading Umenyiora, who, while at camp, does not plan on practicing until there is a resolution to the situation. This could be the first fight between the NFL and the NFLPA under the new collective bargaining agreement.

Despite earlier reports that the New York Giants had lowered their asking price for DE Osi Umenyiora, the team has ended any search for a possible trading partner, according to the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora. With no team offering a first-round pick, just ones in the second and third rounds, they told his agent to stop seeking a deal.

As has been discussed, the cost-certainty of a first-round pick these days makes it easier for teams to hold onto their draft picks. The new contract Umenyiora would have wanted would also have put any of the five interested teams into a tight cap situation.

Where does that leave the defensive end? He has two years left on his current contract and his short-lived holdout to start training camp didn't help things. Could the Giants cut him? You never know.

The New York Giants have yet to find a trading partner for defensive end Osi Umenyiora because they are seeking a first-round draft pick as compensation. However, the receiving team would also need to sign Umenyiora to a new contract, which the Giants have refused to provide to him. A first-round draft pick and an expensive new contract is too much, given how much cost-certainty there is now with draft picks and the rookie salary pool.

Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun now reports that the Giants have lowered their demand of a first-round pick to a second-round one. The Ravens are one of five interested teams, which may also include the New England Patriots. A previous report mentioned the Broncos as in the mix, but not the Patriots.

A second-round pick may make this trade more palatable for the Broncos, but their ability to hand out a long-term contract to a defensive end with an injury history still puts some doubt into whether the team would actually look at making this deal.

While they continue to pursue former first-round picks who have largely disappointed during their stints so far in the league, the Denver Broncos may be in on the New York Giants' Osi Umenyiora, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. The Broncos are reportedly one of five teams interested in acquiring the 29-year-old defensive end. However, two of those teams, the Ravens and the Seahawks, apparently aren't that interested in him.

The New York Giants want a first-round pick for him, which could be too expensive for the Broncos to trade away. Umenyiora does have an injury history and while he would certainly help the pass-rush, would he alone help turn around the defense? He would also want a new contract, which the Broncos would have a hard time fitting in under the salary cap. And trading a first-round pick that conceivably could be in the top half of the round wouldn't be great.

Unless the Giants back off their first-round selection demand, it would be best for the Broncos to move on. But lower the offer and the Broncos could add more to the pass rush with Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller already looking to help out where the team struggled last season. Umenyiora had 11-1/2 sacks in 2010 and 10 forced fumbles. He has 60 career sacks.
