The Rockies dropped their fifth straight series when they lost 8-2 to the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon. Just as in Saturday's game, the Rockies ran into trouble in the seventh inning. By the end of the inning, the game was already over for the Rockies.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Todd Helton hit his sixth home run of the season to close the gap to 3-2. Jason Hammel then came out for the top of the seventh, but he allowed three consecutive single after a leadoff foul out. After the third single scored a run, Jim Tracy went to Franklin Morales. But that only exacerbated the problem as he allowed an RBI double to Will Venable and left the game without recording an out.

Tracy then put Felipe Paulino in the game only to see Jason Bartlett double in the two men on base. Brad Hawpe then added an RBI single to close out the scoring. Morales and Paulino continue to pitch their way off the team.

Hammel (3-3) was charged with six runs, though the final two runs crossed the plate as inherited runners on Morales and Paulino. Mat Latos, his counterpart, went 5.2 innings allowed that Helton homer and an unearned run in the first inning when Eric Patterson committed a throwing error on a Troy Tulowitzki fielder's choice.

The Rockies will face the San Francisco Giants for a quick two-game series to start the new week. Clayton Mortenson and Tim Lincecum will pitch in the contest.

The Colorado Rockies' offense certainly found itself over the last two games against the San Diego Padres, but on Saturday a 7-1 lead turned into a 9-7 loss. Certainly the rainy conditions played a part in the seventh inning when Jhoulys Chacin turned wobbly and allowed a few base runners before committing a two-run error. But then the bullpen failed to keep a lead. And former Rockies Brad Hawpe delivered a crushing blow with a two-run homer. The Rockies still can recover this series with a victory on Sunday.

Jason Hammel took the loss on Tuesday in the Rockies' 4-3 defeat to the New York Mets, but he did a solid job over seven innings, allowing four runs and striking out five. He now has a string of three straight starts in which he pitched seven innings and he has gone at least six frames in six of his seven starts. The Rockies will need Hammel to go deep into this game after Saturday's shaky performance by the bullpen and what appears to be Jim Tracy's reluctance to use either Franklin Morales or Felipe Paulino in the game.

Mat Latos was one of the key components to the Padres' unexpected success in 2010. While he is still averaging over nine strikeouts per nine innings, Latos has been a bit more hittable this season (31 hits in 33.1 innings) and has given up six long balls so far. He's still looking for his first win of the season (0-5 in six starts), but his offense has averaged just 2.38 runs for him, including two shutouts.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. MT. Tune into ROOT Sports to see the Rockies finish this series.

Had rain forced this game to go into a delay and even a game-called situation after five or six innings, the Colorado Rockies could have picked up a nice 7-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday afternoon. But, as things turned out, the Rockies couldn't hold on, allowing six runs over the last three innings. The Brad Hawpe-led Padres earned a 9-7 victory.

After Kyle Phillips put the Padres on the board in the third inning with an RBI single, the Rockies answered back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. Todd Helton's fifth homer of the season capped the inning, but Troy Tulowitzki blasted a two-run double right before that, only to be thrown out at third on the play.

Carlos Gonzalez, who had an RBI single in the third, hit his fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning. Ty Wigginton and Chris Iannetta added a single and a sacrifice fly, respectively, to put the Rockies up, 7-1.

Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin worked his way through the first six innings of the game as was expected. He allowed just one run up until the start of the seventh. Then he started the inning with two walks and a single. Eric Patterson had the next at-bat and on the ball in play, Chacin was charged with two errors when he attempted the throw to first base, allowing two runs to score. Matt Lindstrom came into relieve Chacin and allowed all the inherited runners to score.

The Padres got to Rafael Betancourt in the eight for two more runs to tie the game at seven. Manager Jim Tracy then sent closer Huston Street out for the ninth inning. Street allowed a leadoff double to Will Venable, but he was thrown out on a Jorge Cantu fielder's choice. And then Brad Hawpe, who already had two hits in the game, unloaded for a two-run home run and a 9-7 Padres lead.

Heath Bell picked up his ninth save of the season, while Huston Street fell to 0-1 on the season.

The Rockies and Padres conclude this series on Sunday afternoon at 1:15 p.m. MT with Jason Hammel and Mat Latos on the mound.

After Friday night's offensive explosion, the Colorado Rockies will need more of the same in Saturday's afternoon contest with the San Diego Padres. But they'll also need to shore up the pitching after allowing seven runs in the previous game.

Jhoulys Chacin has taken on an increased importance for the Rockies with Ubaldo Jimenez attempting to work things out. In Monday's game, Chacin held the Mets to one run on two hits in six innings. And that's despite six walks. Chacin has had only one start in which he has not walked any batters. In his last two starts, he has walked 10 and for the season, 19. This will be his first career start against the Padres.

Aaron Harang, meanwhile, is in his first year with the Padres and has gone 5-2 in seven starts. At Coors Field, Harang has a career 4.43 ERA and a 1.522 WHIP in four starts (22.1 IP). Harang pitched well in his last start, allowing two runs on eight hits in seven innings for his fifth win. In his two starts before then, he went 0-2 and allowed 12 runs.

An injection of San Diego Padres pitching into Coors Field and the Colorado Rockies' offense regained its strength in a 12-7 victory on Friday night. The Rockies put one run on the scoreboard in six of the eight innings they played. Unlike previous games, the Rockies were able to hit with runners in scoring position, going 7-for-17.

Troy Tulowitzki paced the offense in his 3-for-5 night with a two-run double to open the scoring in the first inning, and then he followed with his 10th home run of the season with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Carlos Gonzalez got into the act as well with an RBI triple in the second to score Jonathan Herrera and then he scored on the same play because of an errant throw by Jason Bartlett. CarGo stole two bases, too, for six on the season.

Cameron Maybin was an annoyance to the Rockies, first with a solo homer in the second inning and then a two-run home run in the seventh. The latter brought the game within two for the Padres, 9-7, but the bottom of the eighth turned into a failure for Padres reliever Ernesto Frieri. Carlos Gonzalez drew a walk and stole second base. Dexter Fowler entered the game as a pinch-hitter, drove in Gonzalez and advanced to second on the throw back into the infield. Ryan Spilborghs sent a ball fly to left field for Ryan Ludwick, who should have easily caught the ball. But Ludwick flubbed the catch, allowing a run to score and Spilborghs to reach third base. Frieri then committed a balk to send Spilborghs across home plate, making it a 12-7 game in favor of the Rockies.

Starter Jorge De La Rosa (5-1) allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks in 5.2 innings. He made two wild pitches as well. Matt Belisle allowed Maybin's two-run home run, but Matt Reynolds, Rafael Betancourt and Huston Street combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and allowed just one hit.

The second game of this series is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. MT on Saturday. Jhoulys Chacin and Aaron Harang are the scheduled starts.

The Colorado Rockies are in strange territory this season, out of the NL West division lead for the first time since April 6, when they started the day a half a game out of first place. The Rockies built a lead that reached 4.5 games at certain points and as late as May 1, but then no other NL West team was playing quite that well in April.

But the Giants are now on a six-game winning streak and hold a one-game lead over the Rockies, who have dropped four straight series (including a three-game sweep at the hands of the Giants). You name it and it's probably struck the Rockies: injuries (Ty Wigginton, Esmil Rogers), poor pitching (Ubaldo Jimenez among others), lack of hitting with runners in scoring position, Jose Lopez/Ian Stewart third base production hole, etc.

Maybe a weekend series with the sub-.500 San Diego Padres will set up the Rockies for good things when a two-game series with the Giants starts on Monday.

Losers of their last four series, the Colorado Rockies play the San Diego Padres for the first time this season. And for the first time since early April, the Rockies will not be the first place team in the NL West. The Rockies' lack of offense and the failure of Ubaldo Jimenez to be that dominant pitcher have caught up with them finally.

But the Rockies, one should hope, will be able to get on track with a series against the last-place Padres. After surprising Major League Baseball in 2010 (before faltering during the final weeks of the season), the Padres are back where they previously had been.

After spending parts of the last five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees, Moseley changed leagues as a free agent for the confines of Petco Park and the rest of the National League. Despite a 1-4 record in 2010, Moseley has pitched quite well for the Padres, holding a 2.47 ERA. Not much of a strikeout pitcher (3.9 K/9), Moseley has induced a ground balls at a 54.2 percent rate to be successful early on.

Moseley uses a fastball 50 percent of the time and sits around 88 m.p.h. on it. A cutter, a curveball and a changeup round out his offerings. He's coming off a start against the Diamondbacks in which he allowed six runs in five innings.

Jorge De La Rosa returns to the mound after taking his first loss of the season in a 3-0 defeat to the San Francisco Giants last Sunday. He battled early on and finished six innings with three runs allowed, five walks and seven strikeouts. The Rockies will need De La Rosa to pitch big with Ubaldo Jimenez still struggling.
