The Charlotte Bobcats defeated the Denver Nuggets, 100-98, keeping Denver coach George Karl stuck on win No. 999.

Going for the milestone victory in the state he played collegiate ball against one of his best friends in Bobcats coach Larry Brown, Karl wasn't able to help the Nuggets shooting woes, as the team went a combined 31-73, 42.5% from the field in the loss.

The loss also snapped the Nuggets seven-game win streak.

Though leading scorers Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony scored 25 and 22, respectively, their 13-of-34 shooting crippled the Nuggets. The bright spot shooting was J.R. Smith, who went 5-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point land. Smith finished with 14.

Charlotte, which shot 50 percent from the field on 39-of-78 shooting, was led in scoring by Stephen Jackson's 23. Jackson also tied Gerald Wallace, who scored 20, for the team high in rebounds with nine.

Karl will go for win No. 1,000 Wednesday evening when the Nuggets visit the Boston Celtics.

The Charlotte Bobcats hold a 52-47 lead over the Denver Nuggets at halftime on Tuesday night, holding off a late charge by Chauncey Billups and the Nuggets. Billups scored nine points, made three assists and had two steals. He was only 2-of-5 shooting, but made 4-of-5 at the free throw line.

Carmelo Anthony continued to have shooting issues early on when he was 1of-6, but finished the half 4-of-9. He leads the team with 10 points. He’s also made four rebounds, but has also turned the ball over four times. It has been a poor shooting night for the Nuggets overall, making only 40.5 percent from the field.

AF: What will it mean if this happens in Charlotte near where your basketball career started? And will Dean Smith be in attendance?

GK: I respect what it says. Longevity in the business. Delivering a product of excellence. Making the playoffs. And just be as good as you can be. I’ve made the playoffs almost every year of my career, but we’ve played the eventual NBA champion a lot early in those runs. Even in Milwaukee we played Indiana, New Jersey and Philly before those teams went to the Finals. I wish we could’ve gotten more playoff wins along the way but I think I've delivered excellence.

I tried to call coach [Roy] Williams today to see if he might be there. I don’t know about Dean Smith. He has so many guys that he has mentored - whether it be me, Larry [Brown], John Kuester, Roy [Williams] and so on that it’s tough for him to keep up with them all and be there for every one's individual milestone. A couple guys from my Carolina team will be there. And I think Michael Jordan will be here. So there will be enough Carolina blood in the building to go around.

Head coach George Karl goes for win 1000 and the Denver Nuggets hope to extend their current seven-game win streak as they visit the Charlotte Bobcats Tuesday evening.

Karl hopes to become the seventh coach to collect his 1000th career NBA coaching victory, in the state where his basketball passion blossomed. Though a native of Pennsylvania, Karl played collegiately as a North Carolina Tar Heel, which is located in Chapel Hill, 2.5 hours from Charlotte.

Should the Nuggets win, it would be additionally satisfying for Karl, who would net the win against his good friend, and fellow 1000 game winner, Bobcats coach Larry Brown.

As a team the Nuggets (13-6) are riding a seven game win streak, though only one of those wins has come on the road, a 106-89 victory at the Golden State Warriors on November 22.

The Nuggets are coming off two career-type games from Arron Afflalo and Nene, in a one-point victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday. In the game Afflalo scored a career-high 25 points and Nene registered 27 points and 11 rebounds. J.R. Smith, who had been electric over the past week was held to five points in the contest.

For the season Carmelo Anthony leads the team in scoring and rebounding, registering 22.8 ppg and eight rpg. Chauncey Billups leads in assists.

The Bobcats (7-13) haven't quite gotten things together this season. Stephen Jackson leads the team in scoring with an average of 18.4 per game. Gerald Wallace is tops with 8.1 rebounds per game and D.J. Augustin's 6.7 assists per game lead the squad.

If there is one bright spot for the Bobcats it's that they play relatively good defense, ranking 10th in the NBA allowing only 97 ppg.

The tip is set for 5:00 p.m. MT and can be seen on Altitude.
