According to a published report on denvernuggets.com, the Denver Nuggets and head coach George Karl are in contract extension talks to keep the coach on the Nuggets beyond this season.

The two sides had begun discussing a long term contract last season, but because of uncertainty with Karl's health, the coach is currently under a one-year contract extension that is set to expire at the end of the season.

According to the report, new Nuggets executive president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri made signing and keeping the coach one of his first, and top priorities when he joined the organization.

"We've said it from Day 1 that George is our guy and we want him here for a long time," Ujiri said. "George is a future Hall-of-Famer. He has earned a contract extension."

The Nuggets and Karl have stated that there isn't a definitive date set in place when the extension will be signed, but that they both hope to have one in place within the next few months.

George Karl's future with the Denver Nuggets after this season has yet to be decided. He did sign a one-year extension to take him through the upcoming season, but the Nuggets have yet to discuss a long-term extension with Karl. According to Chris Tomasson of AOL Fanhouse, Karl would like to sign a multi-year deal with the Nuggets:

"I'm going to live in Denver probably the rest of my life,'' said Karl, 59. "So I think that answer (about wanting to re-sign) is yes. But it's got to be a respectful offer.''

Karl, who is recovering from a fight with cancer earlier in the year, is 986-671 as a head coach, putting him only 14 games away from 1,000 career wins. In his six seasons with the Denver Nuggets, Karl has led the team to winning seasons every year and three straight 50-win season.

Karl and the Nuggets will take the court Wednesday night in the Pepsi Center against the Utah Jazz.
