The details and specifics around Rockies pitcher Jorge De La Rosa's contract have now been released, giving us a look into the make up of the deal.

The Rockies have also agreed in principle on a deal that secures Jorge De La Rosa's return, pending a physical. It is a two-year, $21.5 million contract with a player option that, if exercised, guarantees De La Rosa $32 million. If the left-hander forgoes free agency and exercises the option, the Rockies receive a fourth-year club option for $11 million.

The Rockies were able to get De La Rosa for three years as opposed to the 4 year deal that he was seeking by upping the yearly amount. Locking up De La Rosa provides Colorado with the final piece of their 2011 rotation, a unit that, if healthy, has the talent to take the club back to the postseason for the third time in five seasons.

If this report is accurate, the Colorado Rockies may have snagged one of the top remaining free agent pitchers left on the market --aside from Cliff Lee-- for approximately $11 million per year, a bargain provided he stays healthy.

De La Rosa had received four year offers from several other teams, but decided to take fewer guaranteed years (and likely less money) to pitch in Colorado. He has made his desire to continue working with Rockies pitching coach Bob Apodaca a well known fact, and the money in this contract backs up these statements.

With De La Rosa all but officially under contract, the Rockies 2011 rotation appears set.

While the Rockies continue to search for options outside of the organization to bolster the roster, Jorge De La Rosa appears headed to leave Denver for new scenery. According to the Denver Post’s Troy Renck:
The main sticking point between the Rockies, Jorge De La Rosa and a new contract has been the length of any such deal. The Rockies do not want to go more than three years, while De La Rosa wants a four- or five-year deal. Now that both sides have met, it appears that there will be no way for the Rockies to retain De La Rosa’s services.

When De La Rosa, a Type-A free agent, signs with another team, the Rockies will offer arbitration as a formality in order to collect draft compensation picks. The Rockies will receive a compensatory pick in the supplemental first round and a pick from the signing team.

As one of the premier left handed starters remaining on the free agent market, Jorge De La Rosa expected to garner plenty of attention from clubs desperate for starting pitching. Troy Renck of the Denver Post has listed the first wave of teams looking to pay for De La Rosa's services.

The Yankees are not a surprising addition to that list, as they are normally linked to any and all top free agents. But a couple of names are surprising, including teams in the midst of rebuilds.

Pittsburgh rumors are directly related to the recent hiring of former Colorado manager Clint Hurdle, as the Pirates have also been linked lately to that other free agent lefty, Jeff Francis. It's unknown how big of an influence Hurdle holds over De La Rosa (and Francis), but the interest has been confirmed by multiple sources.

Baltimore is another surprising selection, as they normally avoid bidding on free agent pitchers. They have a very young team that may become competitive this next season, and potentially see De La Rosa as that top-flight starter they need to anchor their inexperienced pitching staff, and De La Rosa is certainly an improvement over Kevin Millwood.

Washington resembles Baltimore two years ago. Their core is still developing, but with the setbackof Stephen Strasburg, they are in desperate need of a pitcher who can provide quality innings. Considering De La Rosa's inconsistent injury history (2009 is the only season he has ever pitched more than 130 innings), he is an odd fit within the Nationals rotation.

Colorado has stood firm on signing De La Rosa to a maximum of three years, and that may become the tipping point towards signing with another team, such as Baltimore, who is willing to offer a four year deal. The Rockies don't want a potential albatross contract such as De La Rosa's to become a factor when players such as Ubaldo Jimenez, Carlos Gonzalez, and Troy Tulowitzki near free agency.

While it look more and more like Jorge De La Rosa will move to another team this offseason, the Colorado Rockies are already preparing to examine other possibilities out there. Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that Tampa Bay Rays pitcher James Shields could be a target for the Rockies. Shields emerged onto the scene in 2007 and 2008 as one of the Rays’ young starting pitchers, but the last two seasons failed to live up to the earlier two.

Shields regressed significantly not only with his 5.14 ERA, but he also allowed the most hits (246), the most earned runs (117) and the most home runs (34). However, Shields also provides significant upside if he can turn things around. In 2008, during the Rays’ run to the World Series, he posted a 3.56 ERA and a 124 ERA+.

Jorge De La Rosa is looking for a four- or five-year deal that the Rockies may not be able to offer.

It appears as though the Colorado Rockies will be unable to sign Jorge De La Rosa before the start of free agency in November. Via the Denver Post:

The Rockies will not be re-signing Jorge De La Rosa before he becomes a free agent. But they remain poised to make an aggressive multiyear bid for the left-hander, and could be helped by De La Rosa landing Type-A status Monday.

Type-A free agent status means the Rockies, provided they offer arbitration, will receive two draft picks if De La Rosa signs with another team. One pick will come in the supplemental first round, which is where extra draft picks are added to the first round.

The second pick depends on where a team has finished and how many other Type-A free agents were signed by that team. Any pick in the first 15 selections is protected and unavailable for compensation. When that happens, the team losing the free agent will receive the signing team’s second-round pick. However, if the signing team has signed multiple Type-A players the compensated team will receive its pick based on the player’s Elias rating.

The paper also indicates that De La Rosa will now seek a four- or five-year deal after seeing Ted Lilly sign a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ted Lilly has officially signed a 3 year, $33 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, removing one of the few top left-handed pitchers from the open market.

This contract sets a baseline for Colorado’s negotiations with De La Rosa. Troy Renck reported this morning that Colorado has had discussions, but have not made a contract offer to the lefty.

Lilly, 34, signed a three-year, $33 million contract Tuesday. De La Rosa is 5 years younger, setting up a situation where he might demand a five-year contract.

The Rockies have opened dialogue with De La Rosa but have not made an offer to him.

De La Rosa’s contract status leaned heavily on a Ted Lilly deal, and now that the numbers are set, the speculation can begin. With Cliff Lee setting his own price this postseason, De La Rosa remains the best possible remaining option for many teams to acquire an impact starting pitcher.

Jeff Aberle of Purple Row wrote about the contract situation, including his prediction of how high the Rockies’ organization is willing to go to re-sign De La Rosa.

Lilly has much more of a track record than JDLR of MLB success (four seasons of 3+ WAR and very few injuries), but he’s five years older and arguably has a lower ceiling over the next three years. We’ll see if De La Rosa’s lack of a track record and perceived risk drop him into the Rockies’ price range (which appears to max out at around 3/24, close to what they paid Huston Street). I’d be willing to go up to 3/27 for JDLR, but the Lilly contract makes me wonder if even that will get it done for Jorge. I wouldn’t count on it.

Though he has stated he would like to return to Colorado, the perceived $5+ million that other teams may be willing to offer for his services may prove to be the difference.
