Wade Collie’s layup with 14 seconds to go vaulted the Southern Utah Thunderbirds past the Northern Colorado Bears 51-50 Saturday night.
Northern Colorado entered the half with a five-point advantage but lost the lead in the final seconds of the game. A Tevin Svihovec turnover turned into two points for Collie, who was assisted by A.J. Hess who came up with the pivotal steal. Svihovec got a shot at redemption but couldn’t convert a potential game-winning layup.
The Bears were led offensively by Derrick Barden, who shot 5-of-10 from the field for 12 points, while adding nine rebounds and two assists. Emmanuel Addo added 10 points for Northern Colorado.
Jackson Stevenett scored 14 points for the Thunderbirds, while Collie added 13.
The Bears next contest will take place on Thursday night when they travel to take on the Weber State Wildcats. Meanwhile, the Thunderbirds won’t play again until next Saturday when they face off against the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona.
