Northern Colorado was looking dead in the water as they trailed Portland State early in the third quarter, 28-10, but the Bears scored the final 21 points to secure a come-from-behind 32-28 victory.
The comeback started when wide receiver Dominic Gunn returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown. Gunn would later scored the game-winning touchdown when he caught a 29-yard pass from quarterback Seth Lobato.
Gunn ended up with seven receptions for 64 yards, adding 118 return yards on just six attempts. Lobato also had a big game, completing 26 of 42 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns.
Northern Colorado had a slow start and allowed Portland State to take the lead. Their defense was just not ready to go, as they allowed Portland State to reach the end zone three times before the first half was over. In the second half, the defense stepped up to play an exceptional half, allowing just seven points.
Northern Colorado improved to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in Big Sky play. Next week, they go on the road to face Weber State.
