Sophomore forward Royce O'Neale of the Denver Pioneers was named the Western Athletic Conference's basketball player of the week on Monday, two days after he recorded a double-double against Nebraska-Omaha.
O'Neale tallied three double-doubles in his freshman season, but earned his first of the season on Saturday in an 82-47 victory with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He also added four assists and a steal, while hitting 7-of-9 shots including successfully hitting his only three-point attempt.
The Pioneers snapped a four-game skid on Dec. 5 against the Mercer Bears before hosting Nebraska-Omaha more than a week later. Through eight games, Denver has posted a 3-5 record with O'Neale leading the team in both points and rebounds.
Denver has just two more non-conference games on the schedule before it begins WAC play on Dec. 29 with a trip to play Louisiana Tech. The Pioneers travel to play the Wyoming Cowboys on Tuesday night.
