The Denver Pioneers took both games in a home-and-home college hockey series against the rival Colorado College Tigers over the weekend, thanks to two strong offensive performances.
Putting up six goals in both games, they increased their lead in the WCHA to four points over the second-place Minnesota Gophers. With the two losses, Colorado College fell into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with eight points.
Friday, Nov. 16
Denver 6, Colorado College 5
In an incredibly back-and-forth game, the Pioneers took a 6-2 lead 1:22 into the third period on a Shawn Ostrow goal, but saw the Tigers rally for three goals before gratefully watching the clock hit 0:00. Pios goaltender Juho Olkinuora made 38 saves in the win.
Saturday, Nov. 17
Denver 6, Colorado College 2
The Pioneers put up three goals in both the first and third periods, keeping the Tigers off the board thanks to two suspensions and solid goaltending from Sam Brittain. Chris Knowlton led the Pios with two goals and two assists in the blowout victory.
All three hockey teams will be in action next weekend, with Air Force returning from their week off to face off against Connecticut.
