For the first time since 2005, the Denver Pioneers hockey team swept a weekend series against Colorado College. The Pioneers capped off the weekend with a 6-2 win on Saturday afternoon in front of a sold out Magness Arena. It was an impressive weekend in the offensive end, as Denver tallied six goals in each game on their way to an 9-1 record to start the season -- the team's best since the 2001-02 season.
Chris Knowlton led the way on Saturday with a four-point effort to knock off the rival Tigers. Knowlton finished with two goals and added two more assists in the four-goal rout. The Senior from Colorado Springs is certainly a leader on offense and he was consistently in on the action in the zone on Saturday. Knowlton has been prolific in each of the Pioneers last three Saturday contests, notching seven goals and three assists.
The Pioneers will now need just one point in the two-game series against Colorado College in February to claim the Gold Pan Trophy. It would be the fourth time in the past five years that they captured the Gold Pan.
