Son Of Former Nuggets Player Nick Van Exel Charged With Murder

The son of former Denver Nuggets player Nick Van Exel has been charged with capital murder following the death of a friend in Garland, Tx., Dallas police announced on Thursday. Nickey Van Exel, 20, and friend Bradley Bassey  Eyo, 23, reportedly were tussling with a loaded shotgun that went off and hit Eyo in the upper body. Van Exel then moved the body to Lake Ray Hubbard where the body was found on Sunday.

According to his attorney, Van Exel admitted to the police that he accidentally shot Eyo without knowing that the gun was loaded. Van Exel, who has yet to appear in court, is currently being held on $1 million bond.

The elder Van Exel played for the Denver Nuggets from 1998 through early 2002 when he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He retired after the 2006 season and is now a coach with the Atlanta Hawks.
