The Denver Broncos defense had been turning a corner the last several weeks with outstanding play. Opposing teams scored 15 or less on the Broncos' defense in four out of the last six games. The Detroit Lions and the Oakland Raiders were the two aberrations (well, at least that's what they look like now), scoring 45 and 24 points, respectively.
NumberFire projects the Broncos' defense to score 8.00 points this week and to be the No. 10 defense on Sunday. The No. 1 defense, the San Francisco 49ers, are projected to have 10.80 points. But the Broncos might be in for a downgrade if rookie linebacker Von Miller is unable to play with a surgically repaired thumb. The team is projected for 2.96 sacks, but if Miller is out the team might not be able to reach three sacks. Elvis Dumervil has been playing better of late, gaining at least half of a sack in each of his last four games. But Miller is the motor that makes the defense run properly.
