Cam Newton Joins Tim Tebow In Elite College Football Category

New, 3 comments

While all Broncos fans wait to see what action Tim Tebow will in tomorrow's Denver Broncos game against the Kansas City Chiefs (can he run for and throw for touchdowns against them again?), the Auburn Tigers' Cam Newton joined Tebow in a lofty category: they are the only two players to rush for and throw for 20 touchdowns each in a single season at the collegiate level.

As Andy Hutchins points out at SBNation.com, Newton could even surpass Tebow this season by throwing for 30 touchdowns and rushing for 20. Newton threw for four touchdowns today and rushed for two more to reach 28 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing.

Correction: As pointed out in the comments, Tim Tebow threw for 32 touchdown passes and rushed for 23 touchdowns during his 2007 Heisman campaign. We regret the mistake.

In SB Nation's early mock draft, Cameron Newton went 18th overall to the Miami Dolphins, who have Chad Henne as their current starter. That' several slots higher than Tebow, who went 25th overall. Newton has the size, speed and athleticism that teams want, but questions of character have some pundits grading him out of the first round.

Whenever Newton elects to enter the draft (he's a junior this year), NFL teams will scout him heavily, though they undoubtedly already have.
