The Colorado St. Rams are off to a 2-0 start with a 75-56 victory over the SMU Mustangs on Monday night. The Rams advanced to the West Region championship of the 2011 NIT Season Tip-off.
The Rams controlled this game from beginning to end with a hot start. They had a 51-29 halftime lead before being outscored in the second half, 27-24. Four of five starters scored in double figures: Dorian Green had a team-high 19 points while Wes Eikmeier finished with 18. Greg Smith and Will Bell each added 10 points. Green had an all-around great night by grabbing six boards and dishing the ball out for five assists.
Pierce Hornung contributed six points and pulled down six boards, four on the offensive glass. He distributed the ball for three assists and made two blocks. Jesse Carr had nine of the team's 12 bench points.
Overall the Rams made 52 percent of their shots, completed 53 percent of their three-pointers and hit 14-of-15 free throws.
The Rams await the winner of the Stanford-Fresno State game. Should the Rams win that game they will head to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals.
