After a slow start by both teams in Fort Collins, both Colorado St. and San Diego St. scored on their final drive of the first quarter. However, San Diego St. surprised the Rams by attempting a two-point conversion after its touchdown and holds an 8-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
Colorado St. used a quick strike from Chris Nwoke to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Nwoke broke off a 63-yard TD run to give the Rams the early momentum. Nwoke rushed for 97 yards in the first quarter. Sophomore QB Pete Thomas completed 3/7 for 26 yards in the opening 15 minutes.
Following a couple of poor drives, San Diego St. found its rhythm on the final drive of the first quarter. The Aztecs capped off a 13-play drive with a touchdown pass from Ryan Lindley to Alston Umuolo. Despite the TD pass, Lindley struggled in the opening quarter, completing just 5/11 for 23 yards.
