Rockies Transactions 2012: Wil Nieves Clears Waivers, Will Become A Free Agent

Catcher Wil Nieves' tenure with the Colorado Rockies has ended, as the DFA'd reserve has opted to become a free agent rather than accept an assignment by the Rockies to the minor leagues.

Catcher Wil Nieves, designated for assigment [sic] this week, has cleared waivers and rejected an assignment to the minor leagues. He will become a free agent Saturday, leaving him able to sign with any team.

Nieves hit a respectable .298/.333/.404 in 16 games for the Rockies in 2012. The Rockies will move forward with Wilin Rosario and Ramon Hernandez handling the catching duties.

There has been no word yet as to where Nieves might land once he becomes a free agent on Saturday.
