The Colorado Rockies have selected Alabama prep outfielder David Dahl with the No. 10 overall draft pick in 2012 MLB Draft. The Rockies had been connected to him in the weeks leading up to the draft, but there were several high school players linked to the team in the final days, such as Courtney Hawkins. Hawkins was also available, so the Rockies obviously preferred Dahl over him.
Dahl is 6 feet 2 and 185 pounds and hits left-handed. He is committed to the Auburn Tigers, but he should sign relatively quickly (the signing deadline for draft picks is July 13 at 3:00 p.m. MT). He is a center fielder who has the arm and speed to stick there and he is projected to be a solid power hitter.
The Rockies' draft history has mostly favored pitchers with Christian Friedrich (2008), Tyler Matzek (2009) and Tyler Anderson (2011) being the most recent examples. Friedrich made his debut for the Rockies this season while Matzek has had to reorient his career and appears to finally be back on track. Anderson missed the start of the 2012 season with injury, but has done well in Asheville (3-0, 4.23 ERA, 20 K).
