The Colorado Rockies are 1-0 on the 2012 season after Friday's 5-3 victory over Houston Astros. Thanks to Eric Young Jr. on the base paths, some shoddy defense by the Astros' fielders and an absolute monster of a shot by Troy Tulowitzki, the Rockies find themselves feeling good heading into Saturday's game.
Top among them is 49-year-old pitcher Jamie Moyer, who is making his first start since July 20, 2010. Moyer blew out his elbow in that start and then missed the entire 2011 season. The Rockies offered him a minor-league contract with an invite to major league camp over the winter. Considered a dark horse as a rotation candidate at that point, Moyer pitched effectively throughout spring training and was able to beat out a group of pitchers, including Guillermo Moscoso and Tyler Chatwood.
Moyer has started 628 games in his career while his opponent, Lucas Harrell, has just five starts under his belt. Harrell made his major league debut in 2010 with the Chicago White Sox and was plucked off waivers by the Astros in July 2011. He went 0-2 in six games (two starts) with a 3.46 ERA. He has had trouble keeping the ball in the strike zone, though, as he has walked 25 batters in 42 innings.
