Colorado Rockies fans know Clint Barmes all too well. They now know him as the guy who had trouble hitting while playing for the team. After Tuesday night's 5-4 loss, they know him as the guy who hit two doubles and the game-tying home run for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Barmes hammered a pitch from Matt Belisle to start the bottom of the eighth inning, knotting the game at 4-4. A few batters later, Casey McGehee singled in Nate McLouth for the 5-4 lead and the victory.
A solid Jamie Moyer start went to waste after a two-run seventh inning gave way to a 3-2 Pittsburgh Pirates victory, but Carlos Gonzalez did his best to temporarily make Moyer's six innings of one-run ball worth it during the eighth inning. With Marco Scutaro on second base, Gonzalez knocked out his second home run of the game, the fifth multi-home run game of his career. He hit his first home run of the season, also a two-run blast, in the first inning.
Rex Brothers relieved Moyer to start the seventh inning, but it turned into a struggle for the young lefty. After an Alex Presley double and a Jose Tabata single, Andrew McCutchen entered the batter's box with a chance to erase a 2-1 deficit for the Pirates. And that he did -- with a two-run double to center field, plating his second and third RBI of the night. Brothers left one batter later, having walked Casey McGehee. Josh Roenicke then entered the game and swiftly ended the inning.
The Rockies (8-8, 3-4 away) will conclude this series on Wednesday with a doubleheader that starts at 10:35 a.m. MT.
