With two men on and one run in after a Jordan Pacheco RBI single, rookie catcher Wilin Rosario stepped to the plate with a chance to tie the game. But closer Heath Bell struck him out for his 40th save of the season. The Colorado Rockies fell to the San Diego Padres, 2-1, and have lost six straight games at Coors Field.
Mat Latos (8-14, 3.60 ERA) enjoyed his finest start of the season, pitching a shutout until he allowed Pacheco's RBI single in the ninth inning. He held the Rockies to just one hit during the first half of the game, but left with six on the board. He struck out nine Rockies.
Jhoulys Chacin (11-13, 3.66 ERA) had a good start, allowing two runs on an Orlando Hudson RBI single in the first inning and a Jeremy Hermida double in the sixth. The bullpen of Matt Belisle, Rex Brothers and Rafael Betancourt combined to strike out five over the last three innings. Betancourt used just 10 pitches to strike out the side in the top of the ninth.
The Rockies (70-84, 38-42 home) close out their home schedule with Aaron Cook on the mound Wednesday afternoon.
