The Colorado Rockies have made a minor move before their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as they have designated LHP Eric Stults for assignment. RHP Esmil Rogers has been called up from his rehab assignments to take Stults' place on the roster. Stults will likely head back to AAA Colorado Springs.
Rogers, 25, broke camp this spring as the de facto Rockies' fifth starter in the rotation. After a dominating performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 7, he struggled and eventually went to the disabled list with a strained forearm. After several rehab starts with the AA Tulsa Drillers, Rogers appears to be healthy and ready to join the Rockies' once again -- though his position on the team is not yet clear.
Initially , he appears to be the long man in the Rockies' bullpen (taking over Stults' role) but could easily slide into the rotation if Aaron Cook continues to struggle. With just one more option remaining, Rogers' future with the Rockies' organization is very much in doubt as well.
Rogers will be available in the bullpen for the series opener against Los Angeles.
