The International Signing period for Major League Baseball began on July 1 and the Colorado Rockies made a bit of a splash by signing right-handed pitcher Antonio Senzatela, reports Ben Badler of Baseball America. No word yet on the bonus that he received, but signing a 16-year-old usually involves a good deal of money. The Phillies may have been interested in him.
↵Senzatela is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound Venezuelan pitcher. Baseball America rated him the 27th best prospect eligible to sign this summer. Scouts believe he will continue to grow and fill out his body while already throwing in the low-90s and reaching 93 mph. However, he still needs to work on his breaking pitches. It'll be a few years until we see him stateside, so some experience with the Dominican Summer League Rockies appears to be in order.
↵The Rockies have had notable success with a previous international signing from Venezuela when they grabbed Jhoulys Chacin in 2004.
