The Colorado Rockies' chance at winning their series with the New York Yankees was delayed a day when they lost, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon. CC Sabathia was brilliant for eight innings allowing just one run. Ty Wigginton came up with a two-run home run for the Rockies in the top of the ninth, but it was too little and too late to matter much.
The Rockies will turn to rookie Juan Nicasio on Sunday afternoon. Making his second career interleague start and sixth overall start, Nicasio is looking to rebound from his outing against the Cleveland Indians on the road. Ultimately, the Rockies did win that game, 8-7, but Nicasio failed to complete the fifth inning. In total he allowed six runs (two scored as inherited runners to Rex Brothers) on seven hits (two home runs) in 4.2 innings. It was a disappointment after having struck out nine and allowing two runs in his second win of the season, defeating the Padres, 6-3.
Ivan Nova will do his best to keep the Rockies in check. The 24-year-old righthander has pitched roughly the same this season as he had in 2010. His ERA has improved slightly from 4.50 to 4.13, but he's still allowing base runners at roughly the same rate (1.450 to 1.452 in 2010). Nova enters this game having come off his best start of the season. On the road against the Cincinnati Reds, Nova threw eight innings of one-run ball and struck out seven to improve to 7-4 this season.
This game starts at 12:05 p.m. MT.
