The Colorado Rockies picked up another frustrating loss on Monday night when the San Diego Padres beat them, 3-1. It would be easy to say that the nearly 90 minute weather delay played a part in this loss, but that excuse likely wouldn't hold up much.
Rockies starter Aaron Cook had thrown 5.2 innings before the weather delay, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. He had escaped a bases-loaded situation in the first inning when he only allowed a sacrifice fly. Then in the sixth, Ryan Ludwick hit into an RBI ground out for the Padres' second run of the game. Then came the delay.
Matt Belisle pitched for Cook when the game resumed, allowing no runs over the next 2.1 innings. Rafael Betancourt gave up the third run on an Alberto Gonzalez infield single.
So it certainly wasn't the pitching's fault in this contest. The bats were silent--again. In the fourth inning, Ty Wigginton walked and then stole second before Charlie Blackmon singled him in for their only run of the game. Blackmon stole second and Chris Iannetta intentionally walked before Aaron Cook ended the fourth with a fielder's choice ground out.
After back-to-back singles to start the fifth inning, the Rockies didn't have any more hits. Rookie Anthony Bass made his first career start in the majors and picked up the win, allowing one run in five innings on five hits and four walks.Cory Luebke, Mike Adams and Heath Bell came the Rockies quiet after that.
The Rockies (31-35, 15-18 home) continue this series on Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m. MT. Wade LeBlanc and Juan Nicasio are the expected starters.
