The Hi-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, the Modesto Nuts, were selected in Jan. 2010 to host the 2011 California League/Carolina League All-Star Game. And in that contest, the Nuts will have three representatives on the Cal League Team. Pitchers Chad Bettis and Dan Houston and 1B Mike Zuanich will play in the game.
↵Bettis was a second round selection by the Rockies in 2010 and Bettis was on fire for the first month and a half of the season. He was among the top leaders in ERA and strikeouts, though he only remains that high in the latter category. He has 79 in 71 innings so far. He rebounded in his last start with two hits allowed and eight strikeouts in eight innings.
↵Houston was a seventh round selection in 2008 and is in Modesto for a second go-around. This time he's taken the Cal League with a 6-1 ERA and a 3.19 ERA.
↵Mike Zuanich, a soon-to-be 25-year-old first baseman, is also on his second tour with the Nuts. He already has 11 home runs and will almost assuredly break his career-high of 14, set in 2009 between short-season Tri-City (7) and Low-A Asheville (7). He is the only starter among the three players.
↵Nuts managers Jerry Weinstein and his staff will be the coach for the Cal League Team. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 21.
