Chris Nelson Recalled By Colorado Rockies; Alfredo Amezaga Designated For Assignment

On Sunday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies announced that infielder Alfredo Amezaga was designated for assignment and that Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox infielder Chris Nelson has been recalled. He will be available for today's game. This is the latest move by the club to shake up the roster, earlier designating for assignment Jose Lopez.

Amezaga signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies during the offseason while making his way back from microfracture surgery in 2009. He was recalled by the Rockies at the end of April, but was only a sporadic bench player. He hit .242/.297/.273 in 38 plate appearances.

Chris Nelson spent September 2010 with the Rockies and is best known for his steal of home plate (video) in a Sept. 9 game against the Cincinnati Reds that season. Nelson was the Rockies' first-round pick in 2004 and made his major league debut at the end of June 2010. He hit .280/.308/.320 in 17 games over June and September. He returned to Triple-A in 2011 and is hitting .315/.346/.503 with four triples and five home runs.
