The Colorado Rockies take the field for the series finale with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon, fresh off a 6-4 victory on Saturday night. Emergency starter Greg Reynolds (filling in for an injured Ubaldo Jimenez) pitched six strong innings in his first MLB start since 2008. He received a no-decision for his efforts, but Ty Wigginton’s bases clearing double in the eighth inning insured a Colorado victory and at least a split in the series.
With all the concerns about last year’s road offense, the 2001 version is off to a much better start, having produced 16 runs in the first three road appearances of the season.
The Rockies send sophomore sensation Jhoulys Chacin to the mound, with a chance to take the four game road series. Chacin was electric in his first start of the season, pitching seven shutout innings in a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
His opponent on the mound will be former Dodgers pitcher James McDonald, who had a 3.52 ERA in 11 starts last fall after being acquired by the Pirates at the trade deadline. His first appearance of 2001 was not as effective, as he only lasted 4.2 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Here is today’s lineup for the Colorado Rockies:
CF Dexter Fowler
2B Jonathan Herrera
1B Jason Giambi
SS Troy Tulowitzki
RF Seth Smith
3B Jose Lopez
LF Ty Wigginton
C Chris Iannetta
P Jhoulys Chacin
First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. MDT. The Colorado Rockies will head to Queens immediately after to start a four game series with the New York Mets.
