Rockies Beat Cubs, Lose To White Sox On Split-Squad Day

The Colorado Rockies played split-squad games against the city of Chicago on Tuesday afternoon and went 1-1. In their game against the Chicago Cubs, the Rockies won, 4-0. Catcher prospect Jordan Pacheco had the big blast in the game with a pinch-hit three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. Jorge De La Rosa started and struck out five Cubs in four innings. Clayton Mortensen, Rafael Betancourt, Edgmer Escalona and Franklin Morales held the Cubs to three hits and zero runs over the last five innings. They combined to strike out four batters.

In their 9-8 loss to the Chicago White Sox, the Rockies made a late attempt at a comeback but came up short (obviously). Ty Wigginton hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to decrease the Sox's lead to 4-2. First base prospect Ben Paulsen tripled in a run in the sixth, and Matt Macri drove in two on a ground ball in the next frame to tie the game at five. Radames Nazario added two more on a double in the eighth, but the Sox had added four runs in the previous inning. Michael McKenry added a solo homer in the top of the ninth.

Felipe Paulino failed to enhance his case for the fifth spot in the rotation, allowing four runs on two walks and eight hits in three innings. Matt Daley kept his ERA at 0.00 with another scoreless inning. Eric Stults, minor-league depth pitcher, allowed four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Rockies take to the road for a game in Tempe, Ariz. with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Jhoulys Chacin pitches for the Rockies. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. MT.
