Joe Crede Will Not Report To Rockies Spring Training

The Colorado Rockies' official Twitter page announced that non-roster invitee Joe Crede will not report to camp next week with the other position players. Crede signed a Minor League contract in January with an invitation to spring training. He was expected to compete for a spot on the bench, though as a long shot candidate.

Crede missed the entire 2010 season following back surgery. According to the Baseball Injury Tool, Crede has suffered a variety of back issues over the year. He was on the 60-day DL in 2007 for two herniated disks and twice on the 15-day in 2008 and 2009 for lower back injuries. At age 32 (33 in April), maybe Crede thought his back would be unable to hold up.

Crede showed good power, peaking at 30 home runs during the 2006 season. After that, his back injuries allowed him to play in only 234 games from 2007-2009.

We await more information.
