Houston Astros owner Jim Crane cleaned house with the team's organizational structure when he took over, firing Ed Wade as general manager. On Wednesday night, Crane hired St. Louis Cardinals vice president and director of farm operations Jeff Luhnow to be the team's new general manager. He beat out Colorado Rockies assistant general manager and vice president of scouting and player development Bill Geivett.
Geivett had quietly built himself into a future general manager candidate since he joined the organization in Nov. 2000. While he lost out on this job, he should be a serious candidate in the next round of general manager searches begins next season.
For now, Geivett will go back and keep on working to improve the Rockies' system.
