Carlos Gonzalez can add another piece of hardware to his shelf: the Luis Aparicio Award. Since its inception in 2004, the award is given annually to a Venezuelan baseball player for best performance in a season. Via Troy Renck:
"I am very proud of having this award and will be proud receiving in front on my people of Zulia", González told Venezuelan reporters.
According to the Rockies, Gonzalez received 47 of 100 first-place votes. His main competition was Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera and Seattle’s Felix Hernandez.
Cabrera and Hernandez had previously won the award in 2005 and 2009, respectively. Neither could repeat as the winner with Carlos Gonzalez competing for a Triple Crown. While he was unsuccessful in that, Gonzalez led the National League with a .336 batting average.
Gonzalez will receive the award on Nov. 18 during a Venezuelan Winter League game, reports Thomas Harding.
